Towards the Creation of Change-makers
DISTED College recently marked a significant milestone in its development with the installation of a new leadership team, comprising Professor Dr. Brian Imrie as Chief Executive Officer and Professor Dr. Vikneswaren Nair as President. With over 25 years of leadership experience in both academia and industry, Prof. Brian Imrie took over the mantle of DISTED College in August 2021 and was joined by Prof. Vik Nair, an accomplished academic, in November 2021.
While the board conducted a global search to secure the leadership talent required to propel the College forward, it is not the first time these accomplished gentlemen have connected within their professional lives. Prof. Brian Imrie, a New Zealander, has been an influential leader within Malaysian Private Higher Education for the last 13 years. Meanwhile, Prof. Vik Nair, a Malaysian who recently returned from an academic leadership posting at the University of the Bahamas, is a globally renown researcher within Sustainable Tourism Development. Prof. Nair’s exceptional research achievements have earned many international accolades. Both gentlemen’s research endeavors converged for a period while at a leading Kuala Lumpur institution of higher learning. They are now focused on working together to transform the private higher education landscape within Penang.
DISTED College, this year celebrating its 35th anniversary, was Penang’s first private College and has an enviable reputation of producing graduates who are industry ready. With the new leadership team in place, the College has embarked on a process of rejuvenation to ensure students have a distinctive choice when selecting a college. Having already inserted industry 4.0 content within diploma and bachelor degree programmes, there is an impetus on fostering a vibrant campus and learning environment where students are empowered to be change-makers towards the creation of a more sustainable and inclusive world.
When we spoke with Prof. Imrie he made reference to the late Nelson Mandela’s observation that “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” Prof. Imrie went on to state that “We believe in the capability of the educated mind to be a powerful influence for good. As such, we focus on imbibing students with not only the essential skill sets that make them work-ready but also the confidence to find creative solutions.” Sharing a similar perspective, Prof. Nair added, “COVID-19 has accelerated not just the digital transformation of higher education globally, but also radically reshaped our world. Hence, we are committed to producing graduates that are able to be industry leaders and changemakers.”
In the process of creating change-makers, the College focuses upon exposing students to a variety of learning challenges, while also simultaneously nurturing their inter-personal skills so they are able to embrace a variety of perspectives when fostering creative solutions. It is clear that through these efforts a new generation of learners are being activated at DISTED to tackle the challenges facing today’s world. It may not be business as usual at DISTED College, but watch this College as it sets out to transform private higher education within Penang.
