A Day of Learning and Giving in Perak

In May 2025, DISTED College’s School of Business and Hospitality, in partnership with TT Vision, brought learning and laughter to the Orang Asli village of Kampung Batu Sembilan, Perak. Through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme focused on English literacy, approximately 30 children aged 3 to 12 participated in a day filled with education, play, and inspiration.

A dedicated team of five DISTED lecturers and ten staff members from TT Vision delivered a carefully tailored experience. For younger children aged 3 to 6, flashcard activities helped introduce basic vocabulary through fun and repetition. Older children enjoyed English crossword puzzles that honed both language and critical thinking skills. TT Vision also conducted three dynamic station games to foster teamwork and communication. The programme concluded with a joyful distribution of lunch packs and goodie bags. TT Vision extended their support further by providing basic necessities to the children’s families, reinforcing the initiative’s wider social impact.

This collaboration showcases the potential of academic-industry partnerships to make meaningful community contributions. For DISTED College, it also reflects a broader mission of nurturing socially aware graduates who are not only academically prepared but also community conscious. Initiatives like these leave a lasting impact not only on those served but also on those who serve.

From Student to Industry Trailblazer: Johnson Lam’s Inspiring Journey

Johnson Lam Hooi Liang’s path from a DISTED College graduate to a regional changemaker is a story of grit, curiosity, and innovation. After earning his BSc in Computer Science in 2001, he launched Full Duplex Computers while still studying, juggling side projects in programming and photography. This drive landed him roles at Dell and Microsoft, where he trained teams and led regional e-commerce development for 11 Asia-Pacific markets. Rapid promotions took him to Dalian, China, as Senior Manager at Dell.

In 2011, he helped launch Malaysia’s first 4G network at YTL Communications. Later, at TIME dotCom, he drove innovation projects across Southeast Asia and founded KakiDIY, a community of over 150,000 makers and tinkerers. During the pandemic, he developed a knowledge-sharing platform for Axiata Group before pivoting to renewable energy as Chief Innovation Officer at SOLS Energy. There, he applies his tech expertise to solar solutions while completing a Master of Engineering Science at Universiti Malaya, with PhD ambitions on the horizon.

Exploring Attraction and Relationships: DISTED Psychology Team Engages PRS Students at PCGHS

On 15 April 2025, DISTED College’s School of Psychology conducted a lively and educational outreach session at Penang Chinese Girls’ High School with Peer Support Leaders (PRS). Titled “From Friends to Something More? Understanding Attraction and Intimate Relationships,” the one-hour workshop aimed to guide students in understanding the emotional and psychological foundations of attraction. The session began with an icebreaker where students shared qualities, they found likable in others — a light-hearted yet insightful activity that encouraged openness. This led into a discussion on the four types of attraction: romantic, platonic, aesthetic, and physical. Students explored how each form shapes different kinds of relationships and human connections.

The workshop also examined psychological principles such as proximity, similarity, physical appearance, and reciprocity. Using relatable examples and real-life scenarios, students were invited to reflect critically on what draws people together and how emotional intelligence plays a part. A highlight of the session was the “You & Me Bingo” activity, where students moved around the room to identify shared traits with classmates. This interactive game reinforced concepts through connection, fun, and movement.

Most importantly, the session provided a safe and supportive space for students to explore personal values, emotional boundaries, and communication in relationships. As part of DISTED’s broader commitment to holistic education and youth mental health, the event offered tools for self-reflection and social growth during a pivotal developmental stage.

Trinity Tan Xing – Exploring Creativity Through Multimedia Design

Trinity Tan Xing is currently pursuing her studies in Diploma Creative Multimedia Production at DISTED College. With a strong passion for visual storytelling and digital design, she recently began her internship with the Marketing Department at the college. This opportunity marks her first step into the professional creative industry, where she aims to apply what she has learned in the classroom to real-world projects.

Her interest in multimedia production stems from a lifelong enthusiasm for art and design. Trinity is constantly seeking out new artistic approaches and techniques, often spending her free time researching different visual aesthetics. Beyond design, she enjoys engaging in other creative pursuits such as reading and writing, which she believes contribute to a more holistic understanding of creativity.

Trinity sees this internship as a valuable platform to grow both personally and professionally. She hopes to sharpen her technical skills, gain practical experience in branding and content creation, and develop a better understanding of how design supports marketing strategies. Additionally, she is eager to learn from her colleagues and gain insights into collaborative work processes. Trinity also looks forward to improving her communication skills and building the confidence needed to thrive in the creative industry.

Inspiring Young Artists: A Hands-On Workshop for PSV Students

On 26 May 2025, DISTED College welcomed 35 Form 5 students from SMK Hamid Khan’s Pendidikan Seni Visual (PSV) programme for an engaging 2-hour painting workshop. Led by Ms Khairu Nisa, with support from Ms Nadia Jefri, the session introduced students to both foundational and expressive elements of acrylic painting. The workshop explored key techniques such as brush control, layering, texture creation, and colour blending, while also connecting students to important art movements that have shaped visual storytelling. The central theme of “pergerakan” (movement) encouraged students to think about how to portray emotion, energy, and direction in their compositions.

Students demonstrated a high level of enthusiasm, actively asking questions and taking creative risks in their work. A sharing session at the end allowed them to discuss their pieces, receive feedback, and exchange ideas. The workshop also offered valuable insights into portfolio development and preparation for future coursework.

Beyond the artistic elements, the session served as a platform to introduce DISTED College’s creative academic pathways in communication, art, and multimedia. Students learned more about how they could pursue their passion for visual arts in a structured and supportive higher education environment. This collaboration reflects DISTED’s commitment to nurturing creativity, building bridges with schools, and inspiring the next generation of Malaysian artists and designers.
