Remarks from the President
Rising Expectations
DISTED College was established with a bold vision: to provide access to quality overseas post-secondary education without the need to leave Penang. For 38 years, and with over 14,000 graduates, that vision has remained relevant. As the local workforce becomes more skilled, and as more Malaysians take on global roles, DISTED graduates continue to prove their value in the global economy.
However, success breeds new challenges. The phenomenon of rising expectations—fueled by social and economic shifts—means that each generation faces steeper demands. At DISTED, we believe our graduates must be equipped not only with knowledge and wisdom, but also adaptability, relevance, determination, resilience, sound judgment, and strong communication skills. Academic achievement alone is not enough. That is why we encourage students to engage actively in the wider DISTED community through internships, leadership roles, and service initiatives.
To remain future-ready, DISTED has taken proactive steps to integrate emerging technologies into its academic offerings. We have implemented a policy to embed Artificial Intelligence (AI) into our IT and Computer Science programmes, leveraging Pearson’s AI courses. Once the pilot is completed, we will expand this integration across other disciplines in the coming semester.

Bridging Theory and Industry: DISTED Students Gain Insights at Keysight Technologies

A group of DISTED College degree students recently visited Keysight Technologies, gaining first-hand exposure to advanced electronics and measurement solutions. Organised as part of their academic curriculum, the visit aimed to bridge classroom-based theoretical knowledge with real-world industry practices. Students from the Psychology, Media Studies, and Marketing programmes expressed great interest in the breadth of job opportunities available in areas such as human resources, supply chain management, corporate communications, and customer experience.
During the guided tour, students were introduced to various departments, each playing a critical role in the company’s global operations. A key highlight was the interactive Q&A session with industry professionals, which provided valuable insights into evolving career pathways, innovation-led challenges, and the growing need for adaptability and continuous learning in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
The visit to Keysight Technologies not only enriched the students’ academic understanding but also broadened their perspectives on career prospects in the electronics and tech industry. It was, by all accounts, both an inspiring and educational experience.

Building the Foundation: Loh Yi Qian’s Journey from DISTED to Chemical Engineering at Monash University

Pursuing a career in Chemical Engineering requires both passion and a solid academic foundation. For Loh Yi Qian, now a second-year Chemical Engineering student at Monash University, that foundation was laid during her A-Levels at DISTED College, where she enrolled in the July 2021 intake. She firmly believes that Chemical Engineering offers a path to develop sustainable solutions for real-world problems—an ambition she finds deeply motivating.
When choosing where to pursue her pre-university studies, Yi Qian considered both convenience and opportunity. DISTED stood out not only for its strategic location—being the closest to home—but also for the generous merit-based scholarship that eased her financial concerns. Having a high school friend join her in the same program also made the transition smoother.
Her first impression of DISTED was shaped by its heritage-style architecture, which she found both charming and visually appealing. More significantly, the learning environment stood out for being supportive rather than overly competitive. Lecturers were approachable and often provided guidance beyond classroom hours, fostering a more encouraging academic atmosphere.
Two lecturers in particular left a lasting impact: Datin Helen (Biology), who has since left DISTED, and Dr. Loo (Chemistry). Both helped make science subjects more engaging and accessible. Datin Helen’s encouragement and hands-on lab sessions boosted Yi Qian’s confidence in Biology, while Dr. Loo’s structured teaching approach made Chemistry easier to grasp. She went on to score A* in both subjects.
“I remember during the trial exam, I scored quite low, but Datin Helen never stopped encouraging me. She kept telling me I could do better—and that really motivated me.”
Beyond academics, she developed essential skills in time management and effective study techniques. She credits active recall, reviewing learning outcomes, and practicing past-year papers as key strategies she adopted at DISTED—methods she continues to apply at university.
“You have to find what works best for you. Try different study methods instead of sticking to just one—you’ll never know what works unless you try.”
One of her few regrets is not joining any clubs or extracurricular activities during her time at DISTED. While academics were her priority, she now recognises that student involvement helps build interpersonal skills and networks. She encourages current students to participate actively in campus life.
Her favourite memory at DISTED remains her time in the Biology lab—observing unique cell structures under the microscope. Those practical sessions made a lasting impression. More than anything, she misses the camaraderie of attending classes with friends and the small conversations between lessons.
Now immersed in her studies at Monash, Loh Yi Qian is working steadily toward her goal of contributing to sustainable solutions through Chemical Engineering. Her time at DISTED laid the groundwork, shaping her into a self-motivated and disciplined learner.
We wish her continued success in her academic and professional journey.

Cybersecurity and Data Analytics in a Digital Age

Computer science continues to transform the modern world, driving innovation across sectors and reshaping how societies function. Looking ahead, the field is expected to grow rapidly, with significant progress anticipated in artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, cybersecurity, and big data analytics.
As digital infrastructure becomes more pervasive, cybersecurity and data privacy have emerged as critical global concerns. Increasingly sophisticated cyber threats now demand robust, adaptive measures to safeguard sensitive information from attacks, breaches, and identity theft. Future developments in cybersecurity will leverage AI for real-time threat detection and response, while quantum encryption is projected to set new standards in securing communications. Emerging frameworks such as zero-trust security models and biometric authentication systems will further mitigate risks by enhancing identity verification processes.
In parallel, governments and organizations are introducing stricter data privacy regulations to ensure individuals have greater control over their personal data. These shifts reflect a broader push toward accountability and transparency in data management. As cyber threats evolve in scale and complexity, the demand for highly skilled cybersecurity professionals will continue to rise, reinforcing its status as one of the most vital and promising domains within computer science.
At DISTED College, the Diploma in Computer Science and the Bachelor of IT (Data Analytics) Hons. programmes are designed to address these needs. The programmes provide students with essential skills in software development, database management, cybersecurity, and analytics, preparing them for the challenges of the digital future.

The Mind Gym: Strengthen, Heal & Thrive

On 23 March 2025, students from DISTED College’s Foundation in Arts (FIA) programme collaborated with SOLACEHAVEN to organise The Mind Gym: Strengthen, Heal & Thrive. The event focused on equipping students with practical tools to strengthen their mental well-being amidst academic pressures.
The session was hosted by FIA student Prithika Kumaraguru, who played a commendable role in coordinating the event. The primary speaker was Ms. Hashmitha, founder of SOLACEHAVEN, supported by co-speakers Ms. Rahilah and Ms. Rashvenah Naidu. Through a series of PowerPoint presentations, the speakers highlighted the significance of mental wellness, discussing key topics such as coping strategies, self-care, and emotional resilience.
The event also featured interactive role-play activities, which actively engaged participants and reinforced key messages. SOLACEHAVEN, founded by Ms. Hashmitha in 2020, is a youth-led initiative that offers emotional support through social media platforms. The acronym “SOLACE” stands for Sending Out Love And Care Endlessly, encapsulating its mission to foster emotional well-being among youth. “If you share the vision of SOLACE, start right away; talk to the people around you and give them YOUR shoulder to cry on,” urged Ms. Hashmitha during her session.
The event concluded with a Q&A session, allowing students to interact directly with the speakers and seek personalised guidance. It served as a timely reminder that mental health is essential and should not be sidelined in the pursuit of academic achievement. Students were also encouraged to connect with SOLACEHAVEN for continued support.
Programmes like The Mind Gym create meaningful impact by building supportive communities that prioritise mental health. With 35 participants in attendance, the event received positive feedback for its relevance and depth. Those who missed the session can still reach out to SOLACEHAVEN via Instagram (@solacehaven) for resources, assistance, and updates on future events.

Celebrating Women and Building Community: DISTED Psychology Club’s First 2025 Initiative

On 13th March 2025 and 14th March 2025, the DISTED Psychology Club proudly organised a special event to celebrate International Women’s Day. This event was dedicated to honouring and appreciating women while also spreading awareness about inspirational women who have made a difference in society. The event featured a beautifully designed booth where students and lecturers could purchase elegantly wrapped flowers to express their gratitude and appreciation for the women in their lives. It was heartwarming to see so many individuals gifting flowers to their friends, lecturers, and loved ones, reinforcing the spirit of love, recognition, and respect. Beyond the flower gifting, the booth also served an educational purpose. Informational posters and interactive displays highlighted the remarkable contributions of women throughout history.
Organising this event was particularly significant as it marked the beginning of our journey with a newly formed committee. Despite facing challenges along the way, the unwavering support and camaraderie among our team members, along with the invaluable guidance of our club advisor, made it all worthwhile. From brainstorming ideas to coordinating logistics and setting up the booth, our team worked tirelessly to ensure everything came together smoothly. It was heartwarming to see so many students and lecturers engaging in the event and appreciating its purpose. Indeed, this celebration set a meaningful and inspiring tone for the year. This experience has motivated us to continue organizing events that bring the campus community together.
This event was a beautiful start to 2025, and we are eager to continue creating impactful and engaging experiences for our college community. Here’s to many more successful events that inspire, educate, and unite us all!
