Remarks from the President

Dear DISTED community,

Our learning continues at a very hectic pace, and student activities are progressing well. In fact, our student, Delwina, has just completed a very successful showing at the National Juniors 2026 Judo Competition, winning two gold medals, and also represented Malaysia at the SEA Judo Championships in Vietnam.

There will be a long break for both staff and students this weekend in conjunction with Hari Raya Haji, followed by Wesak Day and His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday the following week. I wish everyone a restful break and look forward to seeing everyone return in June.

Testimony from the Top Scorer: SACE NH April 2026

My achievement in the SACE International programme was not an individual accomplishment, but one shaped by the support, guidance and encouragement of the people around me at DISTED. I was fortunate to learn alongside dedicated lecturers and supportive friends who played a significant role in my journey.

I recall the consistent practice of past year papers in my Accounting and Mathematics classes, which helped strengthen my understanding and exam readiness. My English and Psychology lessons were filled with indepth, realworld discussions and thoughtful guidance from lecturers. At the same time, some of my most memorable moments were in the Art room, where creative sessions added colour and balance to demanding study days. Each lesson contributed not only to my academic performance but also to my personal growth.

The quiet and focused learning environment at DISTED supported my ability to concentrate and fully engage with the syllabus. Equally important was the presence of my classmates, whose energy and encouragement helped build my resilience during stressful periods. We supported one another through assignments, tests and examinations, creating a strong sense of community.

I am deeply grateful for the support from both lecturers and friends throughout the year. This journey has been a truly meaningful and lifechanging experience, and one that I will carry with me into the future.

From Code to Control: Inspiring STEM Learning Through a Python‑Powered Robotic Arm

DISTED College participated in the STEM Fest organised by Tenby International School, providing an engaging platform to promote student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The event also strengthened collaboration and knowledge sharing between both institutions.

As part of the programme, the School of Computing and Engineering presented a demonstration of a robotic arm project programmed using Python—a versatile programming language widely used in artificial intelligence, automation and robotics. The showcase highlighted how programming concepts can be translated into realworld applications.

During the demonstration, the robotic arm was used to pick up objects and place them at designated locations. Its movements were controlled through coordinatebased programming, allowing students to visualise how logical instructions translate into precise mechanical actions.

The session also included a handson component, where participating students were given the opportunity to modify simple looping instructions and experiment with different objects. Through this, they observed how changes in code directly influenced the behaviour and performance of the robotic arm.

The showcase generated strong interest and engagement, with students asking insightful questions about robotics, Python programming and future applications of such technologies.

Overall, the programme served as a valuable opportunity for DISTED College to demonstrate innovation in computing education, promote STEM learning and inspire younger students to explore future pathways in technology and engineering.

SRC 2026/27 Management Meeting: Driving Engagement and Collaboration

The Student Representative Council (SRC) 2026/27 recently held its first management meeting with the College’s senior management, marking an important step in strengthening communication and collaboration between students and the institution.

The session began with an SRC presentation outlining their vision and aspirations for the year, alongside updates on ongoing initiatives. The SRC also presented detailed student feedback, providing valuable insights into student experiences, concerns and suggestions for improvement across the campus.

Senior management responded by highlighting improvements made based on previous feedback, particularly in areas of infrastructure and student experience. These include the replacement of canteen furniture, the introduction of a subsidised Coffee Bot machine, and other enhancements aligned with student needs.

Looking forward, the SRC has introduced this year’s theme, “Engage and Interact,” with a focus on creating inclusive, flexible and studentdriven activities. Planned events include an Open Mic platform to showcase student talent, the muchanticipated DISTED Got Talent 2.0, and a Town Hall session aimed at fostering transparent dialogue between students, faculty and management. The year is expected to conclude with a celebratory event inspired by last year’s Yule Ball Prom Night, with a greater focus on accessibility and comfort.

The meeting underscored that meaningful improvement is a shared responsibility between students and management. The SRC expressed appreciation for ongoing student engagement and the management’s commitment to continuous enhancement of the campus experience.

Why the Iran–Israel Conflict Matters to DISTED Students

While the conflict between Iran and Israel may appear distant, global developments often have meaningful implications for students in Malaysia, including those at DISTED College.

One key impact is the rising cost of living. Conflicts in the Middle East can influence global oil prices, which in turn affect fuel costs, transportation expenses and the price of goods. Students may experience these changes through higher food prices, increased commuting costs and everyday spending.

Global instability can also create economic uncertainty. For finalyear students and fresh graduates, this may result in fewer job opportunities as companies become more cautious in hiring during uncertain periods. As a result, competition in the job market may become more intense.

Beyond economic effects, staying informed about global issues helps students develop broader perspectives. Understanding international events strengthens critical thinking and prepares students for careers in various fields, including business, media, education and international relations.

Ultimately, this situation highlights how interconnected the world has become. For DISTED students, being aware of global developments supports better decisionmaking—not only academically and professionally, but also personally in navigating an evolving global landscape.
