My AUSMAT Journey at DISTED
Achieving an ATAR score of 91.5 was a moment I will never forget. It was more than just a number—it represented months of dedication, resilience, and the strong support system that guided me throughout my journey at DISTED College.
Over the course of nine months, I learned valuable lessons about discipline and perseverance. One of my biggest challenges was balancing my studies while preparing for my SPM examinations, which resulted in me missing nearly two months of classes. Catching up was not easy, but with determination and the help of my peers, I was able to stay on track. My classmates were incredibly supportive, consistently sharing notes and helping me understand topics I had missed.
My lecturers also played a pivotal role in my success. Their dedication went beyond the classroom, as they provided additional resources, conducted extra classes, and made themselves available to ensure we fully understood the subject matter. Their encouragement not only strengthened my academic performance but also boosted my confidence.
Like any academic journey, there were late nights, moments of self-doubt, and times when I felt overwhelmed. However, the encouragement and belief from my family, friends, and lecturers kept me motivated to push through.
While I am grateful for achieving an ATAR of 91.5, the most valuable takeaway from this journey is the resilience and discipline I have developed. Most importantly, it has shown me the impact of having a strong support system that believes in your potential.

Building Skills Through Filmmaking
As part of the Video Production course, students from the Creative Multimedia Production and Mass Communication programmes participated in a short film project designed to replicate a real-world production environment. The project provided a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience, where students were actively involved in every stage of the filmmaking process, including pre-production planning, script interpretation, camera operation, sound recording, directing, acting, and production management.
Throughout the production, students developed essential soft skills crucial for industry readiness. Collaboration played a key role, as each team member contributed to specific responsibilities while supporting one another to ensure smooth execution. Effective communication was equally important, allowing students to coordinate tasks, exchange creative ideas, and address unexpected challenges during filming.
Leadership skills were further enhanced as students took on roles in managing production activities, coordinating crew members, and making decisions under time constraints. These experiences helped build confidence, accountability, and the ability to guide a team towards shared goals.
In addition to soft skills, the project offered valuable exposure to professional production tools and techniques. Students gained practical experience in handling cameras, audio equipment, and lighting setups, while also understanding on-set protocols. This hands-on approach enabled them to apply theoretical knowledge in real production contexts.
Overall, the project fostered an engaging and dynamic learning environment, equipping students with both technical competencies and interpersonal skills necessary for future careers in the creative media industry.

The Importance of Data Science
In today’s digital landscape, data has become one of the most valuable resources across industries, from social media and e-commerce to healthcare and finance. The sheer volume of data generated daily has led to the rapid rise of data science—a multidisciplinary field that combines statistics, programming, and critical thinking to extract meaningful insights. For students, understanding data science is no longer optional but an essential skillset for navigating the modern workforce.
At DISTED College, this importance is reflected in the curriculum offered by the School of Computing and Engineering. Students are exposed to key areas such as data analysis, programming, and emerging technologies through hands-on projects and practical learning approaches. This enables them to interpret complex datasets, make informed decisions, and solve real-world problems effectively.
Beyond technical knowledge, students also develop crucial transferable skills, including analytical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. These competencies are highly valued by employers across diverse industries, where data-driven decision-making is increasingly becoming the norm.
As digital transformation continues to reshape the global economy, the demand for data-literate graduates is expected to rise significantly. By equipping students with a strong foundation in data science, DISTED College prepares them to meet these demands with confidence.
Ultimately, understanding data empowers students to transform raw information into actionable insights, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to organisations and society.

Enhancing Academic Integrity Through Proper Referencing
Students from the Diploma in Accounting programme at DISTED College recently participated in a Referencing Workshop aimed at strengthening their academic writing and research skills. The workshop was conducted by Fairunizan Akbar Malik, who shared valuable insights and practical guidance on the importance of proper referencing in academic work.
Throughout the session, students were introduced to fundamental referencing techniques, including how to correctly cite sources, prepare reference lists, and avoid plagiarism in assignments and reports. The workshop also emphasised the importance of using appropriate referencing styles and explained how acknowledging sources contributes to academic integrity.
A key highlight of the workshop was its engaging and interactive approach. Students were encouraged to actively participate by asking questions, engaging in discussions, and practising referencing using real examples. This hands-on experience helped clarify common mistakes frequently made in assignments and provided students with simple and effective strategies to organise their references accurately.
The workshop not only enhanced students’ understanding of referencing practices but also reinforced the importance of producing ethical, well-researched academic work. These skills are essential not only for academic success but also for professional development in future careers.
Overall, the Referencing Workshop was a meaningful and beneficial learning experience, equipping Diploma in Accounting students with the knowledge and confidence to apply proper referencing practices in their academic journey.
