Celebrating Our Graduates

DISTED College Convocation 2025

Convocation 2025 at DISTED College was a proud and memorable celebration of achievement, growth, and community. The ceremony honoured the accomplishments of our graduating class and welcomed them into the wider DISTED alumni network, which now includes over 15,000 graduates.

A highlight of the event was the return of Mr James Kon, DISTED alumnus and CEO of AUG Student Services. His inspiring message reminded us of the impact our alumni continue to make and the legacy they build for future generations.

We were also moved by the encouraging and heartfelt speeches delivered by Valedictorian Ashley Tan Jia-Yeu and Robin Soh Kwok Hur, recipient of Charina’s Award for Degree Programme Student. Ashley’s words captured the spirit, resilience, and camaraderie of the graduating class, while Robin’s message reflected his dedication and growth throughout his academic journey. Their voices added warmth and inspiration to the ceremony, reminding us of the strength and promise within this graduating cohort.

The presence of esteemed guests including Prof Andy Liew, Vice-Chancellor of HELP University, and Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon added further distinction to the occasion.

As Deepavali approaches on October 20, we extend our warmest wishes to all who are celebrating. May the festival of lights bring joy, peace, and prosperity to you and your families.

With our staff and students taking a well-deserved break during the Deepavali week, DISTED Discourse will also be on pause. We look forward to returning after the celebrations with fresh stories, reflections, and updates from our vibrant community.

To all our graduates, congratulations once again. You have made us proud. May your journey ahead be filled with purpose, growth, and joy. Carry the spirit of DISTED with you always and know that you will always have a home here.

President,
Dato’ Lim Si Boon

Guest Speaker Reflection

DISTED College was proud to welcome Mr James Kon, CEO of AUG Student Services and a distinguished alumnus, as guest speaker at Convocation 2025. Mr James, whose siblings also graduated from DISTED, shared a deeply personal and inspiring message with the graduating class.

Reflecting on his 22-year journey in education consultancy, James spoke about the importance of embracing change, especially in a world shaped by AI and rapid innovation. He encouraged graduates to focus on three timeless qualities: curiosity, adaptability, and perspective.

He shared how asking the right questions, staying flexible in the face of uncertainty, and viewing challenges through a broader lens helped shape his career and leadership. His message was clear: graduation is not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities and growth.

Mr James also reminded graduates to stay grounded in their values, to give back to their communities, and to never shy away from failure,  because every setback carries the seeds of a greater comeback.

His closing words were a powerful call to action: build your future with courage, curiosity, and conviction.

Inspiring Words from Our Valedictorian

Graduation Speeches by Valedictorian and Chairman's Award Recipient at Convocation, Class of 2025

At DISTED College’s Convocation 2025, valedictorian Ashley Tan Jia-Yeu took to the stage with a message that was both heartfelt and deeply relatable. Her speech captured the spirit of the graduating class, weaving together memories of struggle, joy, and growth.

Ashley began by acknowledging the challenges that came with earning a degree. She spoke of long hours spent in classrooms, labs, and libraries, and the late-night group chats that somehow pulled everything together at 3 a.m. She recalled the moments when technology failed during presentations, exams that left minds blank, and assignments that stretched students beyond what they thought possible.

Yet, she reminded everyone that the journey was not defined by hardship alone. There were moments of laughter, inside jokes, celebrations after meeting deadlines, and spontaneous conversations that brought light to even the toughest days. These, she said, were the threads that made their shared experience truly unforgettable.

Gratitude was a central theme in Ashley’s reflection. She thanked the lecturers, especially those from the School of Psychology, for their patience, guidance, and unwavering belief in the students. She acknowledged the families whose love and sacrifices were the quiet strength behind every success. And she honoured her fellow graduates for their friendship, teamwork, and resilience.

Looking ahead, Ashley offered words of comfort and wisdom. She reminded her peers that life is not a race, nor a straight path. There will be ups and downs, detours and surprises, and that is perfectly okay. With a lighthearted comment about still feeling like a “three-year-old adult baby,” she encouraged everyone to be patient with themselves as they continue to grow.

Her closing message was a gentle reminder to slow down and appreciate the present. Graduation, she said, is not just an ending, but the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning, growth, and giving back.

Ashley’s words left a lasting impression, reminding the Class of 2025 and all who listened that the journey matters just as much as the destination.

A Message from Robin Soh Kwok Hur: Trust the Process

At this year’s Convocation Ceremony, we were deeply moved by the heartfelt speech delivered by Robin, the Chairman’s Award for Degree programme student from Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Marketing Management for the Class of 2025. His words echoed the shared experiences, challenges, and hopes of an extraordinary group of graduates who have journeyed through unprecedented times together.

Robin began by expressing gratitude to God, his family, lecturers, and fellow classmates, reminding us all that success is never achieved alone. He spoke fondly of his parents, especially his mother, whose love and guidance paved the way for him from a young age. He also shared a touching nod to his elder brother, who was not only family but also a classmate, making this graduation ceremony even more special.

Looking back to 2021, Robin recalled the uncertainty of choosing a university amid the pandemic lockdowns and restrictions. DISTED College’s serene, green environment stood out as a comforting haven during those difficult times, a place where learning felt possible even when the world was turned upside down.

His stories brought the campus to life: intimate classes with just a handful of students, moments of laughter during breaks spent playing table tennis or making waffles, and the simple yet unforgettable joy of connecting with friends in a time when social interaction was limited.

But Robin’s speech was not just about nostalgia. It carried a powerful message of resilience and growth. He urged his fellow graduates to trust the process. For him, this meant understanding that earning a degree is far more than just passing exams or collecting certificates. It is about building character, developing valuable skills, and cultivating the mental strength to overcome setbacks.

He quoted author Sally Hogshead, saying, “Different is better than better,” encouraging everyone to embrace their unique paths and strive for excellence in their own way. Robin reminded us all that when life gets tough, and when we find ourselves in the valleys of doubt or struggle, it is our persistence that will ultimately make us shine, not just as silver or bronze, but as gold.

Robin also shared a timeless wisdom from the Chinese proverb, 活到老,学到老, which literally means “Literal meaning: “Live until old, learn until old”.

Common English equivalents: “One is never too old to learn” or “Live and learn”.

His words were a stirring reminder that this convocation ceremony is not the finish line but a meaningful milestone on a lifelong journey of learning and personal growth.

In closing, he drew inspiration from the Bible, quoting Colossians 3:23:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

This call to approach life with passion, purpose, and wholehearted dedication resonated deeply with everyone in attendance.

To the Class of 2025: Robin’s speech reminds us that the true value of your achievement lies not just in today’s celebration but in the perseverance, growth, and spirit you carry forward. Congratulations to each of you, you’ve faced uncertainty with courage, and your journey is just beginning. May your future be filled with hope, joy, and endless opportunities to learn and grow.

Extraordinary Hospitality Experience at DISTED College Convocation 2025

DISTED College’s Convocation 2025 was a heartwarming celebration that beautifully blended achievement, hospitality, and creativity. With the support of the management team, lecturers, and non-academic staff, the pre-event preparations were a collaborative effort that set the tone for a truly memorable day. The ceremony reflected the College’s signature warmth and attention to detail, transforming a formal occasion into a celebration of togetherness. Graduates and their families gathered to mark this important milestone in a setting filled with joy and pride.

Guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet by KOTA Dine & Coffee, Michelin Selected from 2023 to 2025. The spread featured a vibrant selection of main dishes and sides, complemented by elegantly presented desserts and refreshing beverages. Highlights included colorful vanilla éclairs with fresh berries, mini ondeh-ondeh Swiss rolls, and rose lychee jelly. Each dish was crafted with care and artistry, offering guests an unforgettable dining experience.

Adding a personal touch, the DISTED management team presented a special dessert counter showcasing assorted tarts, cupcakes, and Hokkaido cakes. Each item was adorned with charming mini flags featuring the DISTED College logo. This thoughtful gesture highlighted the college’s creative spirit and symbolized pride and unity in celebrating the Class of 2025.

The photo booth corner, set against the heritage backdrop of the DISTED Welcome Centre, was another highlight. Graduates captured joyful moments with classmates, lecturers, and loved ones. Laughter and smiles filled the space as families posed with props and friends, preserving memories that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the day.

To elevate the ambiance, talented student buskers performed live as guests enjoyed their lunch. With soulful vocals and musical flair on guitar and piano, the performances created a warm and relaxed atmosphere that reflected DISTED’s vibrant student community.

Convocation 2025 was a shining example of how meaningful experiences can honor hard work, foster connection, and celebrate success. It reflected the College’s dedication to its core values: Excellence, Caring, Collaboration, Integrity, and Inclusiveness. Echoing President Dato’ Dr. Lim Si Boon’s belief that the student experience is at the heart of the College’s mission, this celebration truly embodied that commitment.

As student Ashley Tan Jia-Yeu shared, “As the convocation was held on college grounds, it felt quaint and cozy. Students were able to fully immerse themselves, for the last time, in the place that nurtured them for one to three years. It was overall enjoyable.”

At DISTED College, convocation is more than a ceremony. It is a heartfelt celebration of growth, gratitude, and new beginnings, made truly special through extraordinary hospitality and the collective spirit of the DISTED family.

The recent DISTED College Convocation Ceremony marked a meaningful milestone for graduating students from the Degree and Diploma programmes. It was a day filled with pride and joy, as students, staff, and family members gathered to celebrate academic achievement and new beginnings.

Also present at the ceremony were lecturers from the School of Pre-University Studies, who attended to show their support and join in the celebrations. Although they did not teach the graduating students directly, their presence was a show of unity and shared commitment to the students’ broader educational journey.
