Exploring Higher Education & Career Carnival 2024: Empowering Future Generations

The East Coast District Counselling Council proudly hosted the Exploring Higher Education & Career Carnival 2024 at DISTED College’s Heritage Hall on July 4th, 2024. Distinguished guests included Pn. Nurul Ima Binti Khairudin, Counsellor for the East Coast District’s Education Sector, and Encik Adrian Lok, Founder and Principal Consultant of Eduseed Marketing, among others from academia and educational institutions. Participants included schools, institutes, and educational agencies.

An event like this was crucial to introduce students to higher education and various career opportunities, particularly following concerns over the significant number of candidates opting out of the SPM 2023 examinations.

The carnival was meticulously planned to offer students from diverse backgrounds extensive exposure. Representatives from universities, colleges, and educational agencies provided insights into courses and career pathways. This platform encouraged students to inquire, learn, and plan their futures effectively.  Moreover, attendees had the opportunity to witness demonstrations and videos by participating educational institutions, offering clearer perspectives on higher education’s expectations and its impact on future careers.

As a leading educational institution in Penang, DISTED College is committed to providing high-quality, holistic education. Their curriculum evolves rapidly to meet current and future industry  demands, ensuring students are well-prepared for the workforce, especially in the era of AI advancement.  The event also showcased DISTED College’s community engagement efforts, exemplified by psychology students who contributed through a food sale, with proceeds benefiting Penang Shine Like Stars, an organisation supporting children with special needs. This initiative not only provided practical experience but also underscored the importance of community service in education. The event greatly benefits all participants, paving the way for a brighter future.

Shining Together: DISTED College Raises Fund for Special Needs Community

From May 27th to July 12th, 2024, six students from the School of Psychology at DISTED College organised a fundraising event in collaboration with the Penang Shine Like Stars Association (PSLS) to support special needs children and individuals.

The event commenced with a lively sales fair, where the group offered a variety of beverages to faculty, students, and visitors. Each sale contributed directly to their fundraising goal. Over three days, they aimed to achieve RM500 in sales, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie and support among attendees who shared a passion for assisting individuals with special needs.

Following the sales fair, the team, dressed in matching t-shirts, gathered at the PSLS Centre to conduct volunteer activities. They organised a cooking workshop where five children learned how to make and decorate waffles. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience, preparing waffles for their parents and expressing gratitude by also making waffles for the volunteers.  Their combined efforts proved successful, surpassing expectations by raising a total of RM920. The event not only exceeded its financial target but also fostered a deeper sense of cooperation and solidarity among participants, highlighting the impact of community engagement and support.     Justin Toh Tim Kit ,Student of Bachelor of Psychology (Hons.)

Navigating the Final Exam Period at DISTED College

The final exam period at DISTED College is fast approaching! As this critical time draws near, it’s essential to reflect on these exams’ impact on teachers and students. Final exams serve as a crucial tool in the educational process by thoroughly assessing students’ understanding and mastery of course material.

Unlike regular quizzes or mid-term tests that focus on specific curriculum sections, final exams are designed to evaluate the cumulative knowledge students have acquired throughout the semester. This approach requires students to integrate and apply their learning across the course, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

One key benefit of final exams is their remarkable ability to promote consistent study habits and long-term retention of knowledge. Preparing for cumulative exams not only encourages deeper learning but also helps students retain information over extended periods. This phenomenon, known as the testing effect, underscores the role of final exams in reinforcing students’ comprehension and recall, providing a strong motivation for hard work.

However, final exams also come with challenges, particularly the stress and anxiety they can induce. High-stakes testing environments often lead to heightened stress levels, negatively affecting student performance. Test anxiety is associated with lower self-esteem and reduced academic achievement. Recognising these potential drawbacks, educators must implement strategies to alleviate stress, such as offering review sessions, practice exams, and fostering a supportive learning environment.

As the final exam period nears, the management of DISTED College Penang extends their heartfelt best wishes to all students. Your hard work and dedication throughout the semester have prepared you for this moment. Remember, you are not alone in this journey. We are here to support you. Remain calm, confident, and do your best. Good luck!

Exploring Human Societies: A Transformative Experience at USM

The trip to the Art Museum and Gallery at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) proved to be a rewarding experience, expanding knowledge of human societies and cultures. Accompanied by the Foundation in Arts (FIA) students, participants embarked on this educational field trip on June 21, 2024, eager to explore the fields of anthropology, sociology, economics, and political science.

Upon entering the museum, the group was immediately captivated by a diverse array of displays and demonstrations showcasing the evolution of civilisations across different time periods and regions. Each exhibit was carefully selected to highlight cultural customs, historical events, and societal transformations, deepening their understanding of the intricate fabric of human society.

One of the most significant outcomes of the visit was the opportunity for analysis and critical thinking. Engaging with interactive exhibits and insightful discussions prompted participants to delve into the root causes and consequences of societal issues such as globalisation and environmental sustainability. This experience not only sharpened their analytical skills but also broadened their awareness of the interconnected nature of global challenges.

Furthermore, the museum visit fostered empathy and cultural sensitivity among the group. Exploring exhibits depicting the trials and achievements of diverse communities provided participants with a deeper appreciation for the value of diversity and inclusivity. This newfound perspective inspired them to advocate for social justice and equality in their academic pursuits and future careers.

In summary, the visit to the art museum and gallery at USM was a transformative experience that significantly impacted academic and personal growth. It underscored the importance of interdisciplinary learning, cross-cultural understanding, and continuous curiosity in shaping well-rounded and socially-conscious global citizens. At DISTED College, Foundation in Arts (FIA) students are encouraged to explore the diverse facets of human societies, preparing them for the Introduction to Social Science course and beyond.
