Honouring a Legacy of Learning: The Tun Endon Mahmood DISTED Scholarship Fund
DISTED College is proud to introduce the Tun Endon Mahmood DISTED Scholarship Education Fund, established in memory of the late Tun Endon Mahmood, the Founder and Chairman of Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia. Tun Endon dedicated her life to empowering young Malaysians through education, especially those who came from challenging backgrounds or showed strong academic promise.
She believed that education is not just about grades or qualifications. It is about shaping character, sparking curiosity, and giving students the tools they need to build a better life for themselves and their communities. Her work with Yayasan Budi Penyayang and Kelab Penyayang left a deep impact, and this scholarship fund is a continuation of that vision.
The fund provides financial assistance to students who are determined to succeed but may not have the resources. It stands as a reminder that everyone deserves a fair shot at education, no matter their background. By supporting this fund, we do more than honour Tun Endon’s memory—we carry forward the values she stood for: compassion, opportunity, and the belief that every young person holds potential worth investing in. Her legacy continues through the aspirations and achievements of the students this fund empowers.

Shot on Location: Where DCMP Meets George Town

Anyone can take photos — but we study digital photography. Each frame is intentional. Each shot tells a story. On 21 May 2025, students from the Diploma in Creative Multimedia Production (DCMP) embarked on an immersive street photography exercise in the heart of George Town. It wasn’t just another outing — it was education that left an impression.
Leading the experience was our lecturer, Mr. Zaki Zakaria, whose passion for visual storytelling and experiential learning made the day truly memorable. More than just a guide, he was our creative compass — advising, encouraging, and helping us see the world through a photographer’s lens.
We kicked off with a hearty meal at Nasi Kandar Deens Maju — a warm, communal moment that reflected the close-knit DCMP spirit. Then we hit the streets with cameras and phones, exploring George Town’s UNESCO Heritage Zone, Church Street, Beach Street, and Chowrasta Market.
Street photography. Architecture. Portraiture. Our focus was clear. With guidance from Mr. Zaki, we captured candid moments, textured facades, and human stories hidden in plain sight. The lesson went beyond technique — it was about timing, composition, and seeing beauty in everyday life. Above all, it was about community. Creativity thrived not in isolation, but through shared perspectives, collaboration, and laughter.
One city. Countless stories. Unforgettable memories. That’s the DCMP way.

Physics Olympiad Excellence Camp 2025

On 27 and 28 May 2025, DISTED College welcomed talented secondary students for the Physics Olympiad Excellence Camp, designed to stretch their skills ahead of national and international competitions. The camp combined interactive lectures with challenging laboratory work to deepen participants’ grasp of advanced physics. Facilitators Puan Chin Mai Ying and Mr Carson Tai opened with quantum physics, guiding students through the photo-electric effect before demonstrating how to determine Planck’s constant using LEDs, power supplies and a metre bridge. Workstations equipped with sound metres, lux metres and stroboscopes allowed students to connect theory with precise measurement techniques.
In my session, I connected textbook theory to real-world applications, covering everything from refractive index experiments and Van de Graaff demonstrations to resonance applications and engineering mechanics. Through simulation-based learning, students examined how light behaves, calculated refractive indices, and compared various measurement approaches.
The camp concluded with a certificate ceremony, and four students were selected for the upcoming Malaysia Physics Olympiad Training Camp. The event reaffirmed DISTED’s dedication to inspiring excellence in science and innovation.

Understanding Human Behavior: Psychology as a Tool for Positive Change

Psychology is not just a subject—it’s a pathway to understanding and helping others. DISTED College nurtures students with practical insights and theoretical knowledge, empowering them to understand human behavior, advance holistic health, and foster constructive engagement for impactful careers.
‘。The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” — Carl Rogers. Psychology offers powerful insights into human thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. By studying psychological principles, students learn how to analyse human actions, support mental wellbeing, and cultivate positive social interactions. This knowledge empowers future professionals to approach challenges with empathy and critical thinking.
At DISTED College, students integrate real-world applications with theoretical foundations, equipping students with the skills to make a meaningful impact in diverse fields.

Dr. Lim Chia Yean’s Journey from DISTED to Digital Impact
When Dr. Lim Chia Yean first stepped into a computer training centre at the age of nine, she never imagined that it would spark a lifelong passion for her towards technology and education. Today, she is a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), a HRD Corp Accredited Trainer, and a Digital Marketing Consultant. It is truly a career built on curiosity and a strong academic foundation that began right here, at DISTED College.
“My parents enrolled me in a computer holiday program, and that’s where it all started,” she shares. “I fell in love with programming, graphic design, and website development. That early exposure inspired me to keep learning through school and eventually led me to pursue a PhD in Information Systems.”
Her academic journey took a significant turn when she was awarded the prestigious Star Education Fund scholarship to study for a Diploma in Computer Science at DISTED. But her connection to the college began earlier, when she attended an English holiday camp during secondary school. “I was drawn to the heritage buildings, the lush greenery, and the friendly lecturers. It felt like a second home.”
Dr. Lim describes the academic environment at DISTED as “great and warm.” She remembers the dedicated lecturers, supportive administrative staff, and the sense of camaraderie among her classmates. “We spent hours in the computer lab, helping each other perfect our assignments. We couldn’t afford many paid resources, so we relied on free materials and shared everything we had.”
She fondly recalls two mentors who had a lasting impact on her life. Dr. Koo Wee Kor, the former President and CEO of DISTED, interviewed her for the scholarship. “He told me that financial hardship should never stop anyone pursuing education. That encouragement meant the world to me.” She also speaks warmly of Ms. Vasuky Mohanan, her computing lecturer who offered more than just academic guidance. “She was like a big sister. I could always turn to her for advice on studies or life decisions. We keep in touch and occasionally meet for lunch.”
Beyond academics, she actively participated in student social life. As a Student Council member, she helped organise a campus concert and various outreach programs like IT camps for schools and orphanages. “It was amazing to plan an entire concert, from logistics to the final show. Those experiences taught me valuable leadership and event planning skills.”
One memory she treasures to this day is a surprise birthday party arranged by her classmates. “They told me the project crashed and asked me to rush back to the lab. When I arrived, they surprised me with a cake and a turtle soft-toy, because I walk slower than everyone else! I completely forgot it was my birthday since it always falls during exam week.”
After graduating with First Class Honours in Computer Science from USM, she worked as an R&D software engineer at a multinational company before receiving a USM Fellowship to pursue her Master’s and PhD. Her career in academia blossomed from there, with previous roles at INTI and UOW Malaysia KDU before returning to USM as a Senior Lecturer in 2022.
Her credentials extend beyond academia. She has been a Malaysia HRD Corp Certified Trainer since 2016 and received her Accredited Trainer status in 2024. She has conducted workshops for multinational corporations and government agencies, often focusing on digital transformation. Her business acumen, supported by a Master of Arts in Management Studies from the University of Hertfordshire, has also enabled her to work as a Digital Marketing Consultant, helping startups and entrepreneurs grow their online presence.
To current DISTED students, Dr. Lim Chia Yean offers this heartfelt advice: “Enjoy everything your campus has to offer. Take a walk through the greenery to refresh your mind, maximise the use of the facilities, and build meaningful friendships, as those will become the best parts of your college memories.”
