Why Parents Still Champion the Science Stream: Unlocking Future Success

Although fewer students in Malaysia are choosing the science stream, many parents continue to encourage their children to follow this path. While science subjects are often seen as difficult, and job opportunities in some fields may appear limited, there are several key reasons why parents still see value in science education.

  • Wide Range of Career Opportunities:
A science background opens doors to prestigious and essential medical, engineering, and technology professions. These careers are respected and crucial to societal advancement, appealing to parents who want their children to pursue meaningful and stable jobs. Science-based professions often provide a strong sense of purpose, focusing on solving critical issues like healthcare, environmental sustainability, and technological development.
  • Relevance in a Technology-Driven World:
As technology continues to shape industries, science-related fields are becoming increasingly relevant. Sectors such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy rely heavily on science expertise. Parents who look to the future may encourage their children to pursue science because they believe these skills will be in high demand, ensuring long-term career prospects.
  • Development of Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills:
Science education helps students develop analytical thinking and evidence-based problem-solving abilities. These transferable skills are valuable in various industries beyond traditional science roles. Parents who value a well-rounded education see science as a way to prepare their children for success in careers such as finance, business, and policymaking.
  • Fostering Intellectual Curiosity and Personal Growth:
Science nurtures curiosity by introducing students to complex and fascinating topics, from space exploration to the intricacies of biology. Parents who value learning and exploration may encourage their children to study science, as it deepens their understanding of the world and inspires lifelong learning and innovation.
  • Instilling Discipline and Resilience:
Science subjects are challenging and require focus, perseverance, and hard work. These qualities are essential for success in both academic and professional life. Some parents see the science stream as a way to build these traits in their children, emphasising the importance of discipline and resilience.

In conclusion, many parents still encourage their children to take the science stream despite the challenges associated with pursuing science education in Malaysia. They believe it offers diverse career opportunities, relevance in a technology-driven future, valuable critical thinking skills, intellectual growth, and the development of essential personal qualities. For these parents, science represents a field of study and a solid foundation for future success in a rapidly evolving world. At

Shaping the Future of Malaysia's National Education Through Reformation

DISTED College’s President participated in the recent Workshop for National Education Reformation, held on 14-15 October 2024 in Penang. This pivotal event was organised to shape the future direction of Malaysia’s National Education Agenda as outlined in the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan. The workshop’s primary objectives were threefold: to inform participants about the long-term goals and direction of the education agenda, to gather diverse input from a broad range of stakeholders regarding the current educational landscape, challenges, and gaps, and to formulate bold and radical strategies aimed at reforming the national education system.

The workshop brought together key stakeholders from the northern regions of Malaysia, including Penang, Perak, Perlis, and Kedah. These participants included government officials, educators, industry leaders, and community representatives. Their discussions were centred on five critical areas: Curriculum Development, Lifelong Learning, Strategic Investment in Education, Leadership and Talent Development, and Governance. These areas were identified as fundamental to ensuring the education system’s adaptability to future challenges, including evolving talent needs, technological advancements, and global competitiveness.

One of the key insights from the workshop was the necessity for the national education landscape to undergo dynamic and transformative changes. As Malaysia looks to the future, there is an increasing need for an education system that nurtures future-ready talent capable of thriving in a fast-paced, technology-driven world. To achieve this, developing a holistic framework that spans the entire education continuum—beginning with Early Childhood Education and extending through Post-Secondary and Lifelong Learning—is critical.

Moreover, the workshop underscored the importance of a comprehensive approach to education reform. Success in this endeavour depends on stakeholders’ active involvement and commitment, including educators, policymakers, industry partners, and community members. By working together, these groups can ensure that Malaysia’s education system is not only future-proof but also capable of driving sustainable development and growth for the nation.

Engaging with Animal Welfare: DISTED Students' Volunteer Experience at Cat Beach Sanctuary

Recently, DISTED College students participated in a community service project at Cat Beach Sanctuary in Teluk Bahang, Penang. Cat Beach is home to over 50 stray and abandoned cats and focuses on raising awareness about animal welfare.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by volunteers who explained the sanctuary’s mission and gave a tour. They learned about the various tasks involved in maintaining the sanctuary, the challenges faced in its upkeep, and the importance of volunteer support for its sustainability. During their visit, the students enjoyed interacting with the cats—feeding, grooming, and playing with them. This hands-on experience helped them understand the care and dedication required to work with animals.

Beyond the day’s enjoyment, the visit also highlighted broader issues related to stray animals and sparked discussions on the willingness of young people to engage in social service. The sanctuary’s non-commercial, community-driven work made the experience both enjoyable and meaningful.

Overall, the outing was not only informative but also rewarding. It provided DISTED students with a valuable opportunity to support a worthy cause while gaining insight into animal welfare and volunteerism.
