DISTED Team Wins First Runner-Up at Jabil ECP Bootcamp 2.0

The Jabil Early Career Program (ECP) Bootcamp 2.0, held on 17 and 18 June 2025, offered an intense, hands-on learning experience for future tech professionals across Malaysia. With the theme Absorb, Create, Evolve (ACE), this year’s bootcamp focused on cutting-edge fields including Data Science, SAP systems, and Stakeholder Management — key areas shaping the digital workforce of tomorrow. Bringing together institutions such as MCKL, INTI, TARUMT, UTeM, USM, SEGI, UOW Malaysia, Vitrox College, and DISTED College, the event was designed to bridge classroom learning with industry realities. Participants attended expert-led sessions, panel discussions, and a series of workshops that tested both technical ability and creative thinking.

DISTED’s Diploma in Computer Science team — Averille Tan Hsia Fern, Lee Jia Sheng, Lim Siau Chong, and Ooi Ker Min — represented the college with distinction. Through activities like GenAI NLP simulations, SAP system sequencing, and AI teachable machine exercises, they demonstrated strong collaborative skills and analytical thinking. The centrepiece of the bootcamp was a Case Study Challenge, which required students to apply everything they had learned to propose practical solutions. Guided by mentors and assessed by industry experts, the case study tested their ability to innovate under pressure.

The team’s hard work paid off when they were named First Runner-Up in this national-level event. It was a proud achievement not only for the students but also for DISTED College, reflecting the institution’s commitment to producing industry-ready graduates who thrive in fast-paced, tech-driven environments. This success reinforces DISTED’s mission to provide quality education grounded in hands-on experience and up-to-date skills development. Congratulations to the winning team, your accomplishment is an inspiration to the entire student community.

Learning Journey

Dear DISTED Community,

I am currently travelling in Japan, reconnecting with old friends and visiting educational institutions. Every journey I embark on always amazes me – there is always something new to learn, and we must always be open to new views. This trip reminds me of the importance of our network of contacts. Nothing beats shaking hands with old or new friends, and I’m once again reminded of the strong value system ingrained in Japanese culture.

I begin with values. In Japan, the culture of care and respect is instilled and reinforced over time. The consistency in their approach and commitment to continuous improvement is evident. It can be seen in the teaching approach to young children in kindergartens and schools. In colleges, there is acceptance and respect for creativity, and a celebration of new entrepreneurs. We strive to uphold this ideal by supporting our students and caring for the environment, aiming for excellence in our achievements and outreach, and working collaboratively to strengthen the bond between our students and the broader DISTED community.

In Japan, I reconnected with old friends. The handshake, the warmth that comes through the firmness of the grip, the respectful bow, and the twinkle in the eye are still important in any personal or business relationship. The honesty and candour in conversation, and the follow-through that comes after, help build trust and resilience in long-term relationships.

Discovery and learning never stop at DISTED.

Phor Tay Private High School Students Explore Future Pathways at DISTED

On 21 June 2025, students from Phor Tay Private High School spent a meaningful day at DISTED College, where they participated in a series of engaging academic and career exploration activities. The visit began with a psychology-based career test that helped students reflect on their personality traits and how these align with potential future careers. The session encouraged self-awareness and career clarity at an early stage in their academic journey.

Following this, students toured the college grounds, visiting classrooms, labs, and student spaces. During the program briefing session, they were introduced to DISTED’s full range of offerings across disciplines such as Pre-University Studies, Business and Accounting, Psychology, Computing and Engineering, Communication, and Arts & Multimedia. One of the day’s most exciting elements was the Cash Flow Champions game. Students formed teams to simulate launching a business using a pre-assigned product. Each team built a one-month cash budget and presented their ideas. The Nutmeg Juice team stood out for their creative marketing approach, strong pricing strategy, and clear presentation.

The visit exemplified how DISTED blends academic knowledge with practical, experience-based learning, ensuring students are prepared for future academic and professional success.

Beyond the Books: A Day at Audi Dream Farm

On a sunny day in Balik Pulau, Penang, three DISTED College students embarked on a unique learning journey—volunteering at Audi Dream Farm as part of their Community Service and Co-Curriculum 社区服务与课外活动 subject. This activity reflected the subject’s emphasis on civic engagement, practical experience, and personal growth beyond the academic syllabus.

The students were actively involved in hands-on farm work, including cleaning the areas around animal enclosures and assisting with feeding. Though the tasks were physically challenging, the students embraced the experience with enthusiasm, quickly recognising the value of their contributions. They learned the importance of teamwork, resilience, and environmental stewardship—lessons that can only be fully appreciated through lived experience. The students also engaged with the farm staff and observed daily farm operations, gaining valuable insight into sustainable agriculture and animal care. They expressed a deep appreciation for the opportunity, highlighting how it helped them build soft skills like communication, discipline, and empathy.

We extend our sincere thanks to Audi Dream Farm for their warm welcome and collaboration. At DISTED College, we believe that meaningful learning happens both inside and outside the classroom, and this experience stands as a shining example of that philosophy.

Building Stronger Bonds Through Communication: PCGHS Students Explore Connection and Expression

An interactive communication workshop at Penang Chinese Girls’ High School helped students explore how clear expression, empathy, and active listening build stronger friendships. On 23 April 2025, the School of Psychology at DISTED College conducted a hands-on communication workshop for students at Penang Chinese Girls’ High School (PCGHS). Led by lecturer Teoh Ker Hsin, the session focused on developing interpersonal skills crucial for building trust and connection.

Students reflected on personal miscommunication experiences before exploring how non-verbal elements like tone, gestures, and eye contact shape how messages are received. Activities such as “Can You Hear What I See?” highlighted the importance of clarity and empathy in both speaking and listening.

The session also covered the role of self-disclosure in relationships, helping students understand that healthy communication goes beyond words—it requires openness, active listening, and respect for timing. Through shared stories and guided exercises, the workshop empowered students to apply these principles in their daily lives, contributing to stronger friendships and improved confidence in expressing themselves.
