Dear DISTED Community,<\/p>

This issue of Discourse covers our annual Merdeka Day. It is a time of reflection, celebration, and gratitude to our countrymen who made our independence possible in 1956. You will hear from our colleagues on the day’s meaning, and you will hear about the celebration by our students at DISTED Got Talent on the evening of 27 August.<\/p>

We are also very pleased to announce that DISTED College has been recognised by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) from the UK, and our Diploma in Accounting now has Higher Diploma standing from the SQA.<\/p>

Our own Delwina Cheah, from our HELP Degree Program in Psychology, has won a Bronze for Penang at the current SUKMA in 2026. Congratulations to her for flying Penang and DISTED’s flag.<\/p>

A Legacy of Two Heroes in My Life<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Every 31 August, Malaysians celebrate Merdeka with pride. For me, however, Merdeka carries a much deeper and more personal meaning. It is a day that reminds me of two heroes in my life\u2014my grandfather,\u00a0Berahim\u00a0bin\u00a0Chik, and my father, who dedicated his life to serving in the army.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My grandfather belonged to a generation that lived through one of the most difficult chapters in Malaya’s history. He fought for what he believed in and devoted his life to the struggle for an independent homeland. His journey, documented in\u00a0\u2018Memoir Ibrahim\u00a0Chik: Dari API\u00a0ke\u00a0Rejimen\u00a0Ke-10\u2019, reflects the complexities and sacrifices of those who lived through the struggle for Malayan independence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As his granddaughter, I carry immense pride in knowing that he was part of that generation which\u00a0witnessed\u00a0the long and difficult road towards Merdeka. His story reminds me that independence was not simply a date in history\u2014it was built upon the sacrifices, convictions and struggles of people who came before us.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My second hero is my father, who served as an army officer and dedicated his life to protecting the peace and harmony of our country. His service\u00a0represents\u00a0another generation’s responsibility: not only to inherit independence, but to safeguard it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Two generations. Two different journeys. One shared legacy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

My grandfather fought for the dream of freedom; my father served to protect the peace that freedom made possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That is why Merdeka is especially close to my heart.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

When I see the Jalur\u00a0Gemilang\u00a0flying proudly, I do not only see a symbol of Malaysia. I see the faces,\u00a0sacrifices\u00a0and courage of two men I am blessed to call my grandfather and my father.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

August has always held a special meaning for me. It is my birthday month, and coincidentally, it is also the month Malaysia celebrates Merdeka. Every year, while I celebrate another year of life, the nation celebrates another year of independence. What began as a simple coincidence has, over time, become a meaningful reminder of how closely our personal journeys can become intertwined with the places we call home.\u00a0<\/p>

Having spent 30 years growing up in Malaysia, I have\u00a0witnessed\u00a0the country through many\u00a0different stages\u00a0of my own life. My understanding of Merdeka has therefore evolved with me. As a child, it was the flags,\u00a0celebrations\u00a0and patriotic songs. As I grew older, it became an appreciation of the sacrifices that shaped our nation. Today, as an educator, I see Merdeka as something that extends beyond historical independence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

To me, Merdeka is also about the freedom to learn, to think critically, to pursue our\u00a0aspirations,\u00a0and to contribute meaningfully to society.\u00a0As a psychology lecturer, I often remind students that development is not simply about where we begin, but also about how our experiences shape who we become.\u00a0Perhaps the\u00a0same can be said of a nation. Malaysia continues to grow through the experiences,\u00a0contributions\u00a0and choices of its people.\u00a0Our diversity is one of those defining experiences.\u00a0Different cultures, languages,\u00a0traditions\u00a0and perspectives may sometimes challenge us, but they also give Malaysia its character. Unity does not require us to be identical; it requires us to\u00a0recognize\u00a0that our differences can coexist within a shared sense of belonging.\u00a0<\/p>

So, every August, I celebrate two journeys: another year of my own growth and another year of Malaysia’s independence.\u00a0Thirty years of growing up with Malaysia has taught me that Merdeka is not only something we remember.\u00a0It is something we continue to\u00a0shape;\u00a0together.\u00a0And\u00a0perhaps that\u00a0is why August will always feel a little more special to me: it is a month that reminds me both to celebrate how far I have come and to reflect on the Malaysia we hope to build ahead.\u00a0<\/p>

Merdeka Means Listening Too <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Every August, Malaysians celebrate Merdeka by remembering the nation\u2019s journey towards independence. While freedom allows us to express our opinions, it also carries an equally important responsibility, the willingness to listen to others.\u00a0<\/p>

In recent years, social media has made it easier than ever to share our views. At the same time, it has also amplified disagreements. Discussions surrounding politics, race, religion,\u00a0language\u00a0and education often become highly\u00a0polarised, with people quickly taking sides. Psychologically, this is not surprising. We naturally seek information that confirms our existing beliefs, a tendency known as\u00a0confirmation bias.\u00a0As we spend more time in online spaces that reinforce our perspectives, it becomes increasingly difficult to understand why others may think differently.\u00a0<\/p>

When our beliefs feel challenged, we may become defensive and focus on winning an argument rather than understanding another person\u2019s perspective.\u202fMeaningful conversations begin with listening. Empathy and perspective-taking allow us to understand why someone may hold a different opinion, even when we do not share the same view. They remind us that our beliefs are shaped by our experiences,\u00a0culture,\u00a0and the environments in which we live.\u00a0<\/p>

The spirit of Merdeka is reflected in our willingness to engage in respectful dialogue, listen with an open\u00a0mind,\u00a0and seek common ground despite our differences. These small everyday choices help foster greater understanding and strengthen the unity that brings us together as Malaysians.\u00a0<\/p>

This Merdeka, let us celebrate the diversity that enriches our nation while remembering that we\u00a0are, above all, Malaysians.\u00a0<\/p>

Building Malaysia Through Everyday Actions <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When we hear the word\u00a0Merdeka, images of parades, fireworks, and the Jalur\u00a0Gemilang\u00a0often come to mind. However, Merdeka\u00a0represents\u00a0much more than an annual celebration. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by\u00a0previous\u00a0generations and a call for all Malaysians to contribute towards the nation’s future.\u00a0<\/p>

While our\u00a0forefathers\u00a0fought to achieve independence, the challenges faced by today’s generation are different. Young Malaysians live in an era shaped by rapid technological change, social media, environmental concerns, and increasing global connectivity. Issues such as misinformation, cyberbullying, social division, and sustainability require thoughtful action and responsible citizenship.\u00a0<\/p>

The spirit of Merdeka continues whenever individuals choose kindness over hatred, facts over rumours, and unity over prejudice. These everyday decisions help strengthen communities and preserve the values that contribute to a harmonious society.\u00a0<\/p>

Malaysia’s diversity\u00a0remains\u00a0one of its greatest strengths. In schools, workplaces, and communities, people from\u00a0different backgrounds\u00a0interact, learn from one another, and work towards common goals. By embracing mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation, Malaysians continue to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0that diversity is a source of unity rather than division.\u00a0<\/p>

Merdeka is also about responsibility. Positive change begins with simple actions such as helping those in need, protecting the environment, pursuing education with determination, and contributing meaningfully to society. Collectively, these small actions create lasting impact.\u00a0<\/p>

As we celebrate Merdeka, let us not only commemorate our nation’s freedom but also reflect on how we can contribute to its future. The progress of Malaysia depends not only on tomorrow, but on the choices we make today.\u00a0<\/p>

The powerful echoes of Tunku Abdul Rahman’s seven historic calls continue to inspire Malaysians every 31 August. From Perlis to Johor, and across the seas to Sabah and Sarawak, these words remind us of our nation’s hard-earned freedom, unity, and pride.\u00a0<\/p>

For Malaysians, Merdeka is much more than a public holiday marked by waving the Jalur\u00a0Gemilang\u00a0or watching national parades. It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by past generations to secure a sovereign nation where we are free to learn, grow, and pursue our ambitions. As students of DISTED College, we enjoy educational opportunities that many before us could only dream of. With these opportunities comes the responsibility to use our knowledge wisely and contribute positively to society.\u00a0<\/p>

Malaysia’s strength lies in its diversity. At DISTED College, students from\u00a0different cultures, religions, and backgrounds learn together, share experiences, and build lasting friendships. This reflects the true spirit of Merdeka, where respect, understanding, and unity are valued above prejudice and division. Every year on\u00a031 August, Malaysians come together to celebrate\u00a0Hari\u00a0Kebangsaan\u00a0(National Day), commemorating the nation’s independence from British colonial rule in 1957. More than just a public holiday, Merdeka Day serves as a meaningful reminder of Malaysia’s journey towards becoming a sovereign, united, and diverse nation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of the most memorable moments in Malaysian history took place at Stadium Merdeka, when Malaysia’s first Prime Minister,\u00a0Tunku Abdul Rahman, proclaimed independence with his iconic cry of\u00a0“Merdeka!”\u00a0repeated seven times before thousands of Malaysians. His declaration\u00a0symbolised\u00a0freedom, hope, and unity for a newly independent nation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Today, Merdeka Day is celebrated by Malaysians from all backgrounds, cultures, and communities. Across the country, homes, schools, and workplaces are adorned with the\u00a0Jalur\u00a0Gemilang, while patriotic songs, cultural performances, community activities, and national events bring people together in a shared celebration of nationhood. These traditions reflect the values of unity, harmony, and mutual respect that continue to strengthen Malaysia.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Merdeka is also an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by earlier generations in securing the freedoms we enjoy today. Their resilience, determination, and commitment to nation-building laid the foundation for a peaceful and progressive Malaysia. As Malaysians, it is our responsibility to\u00a0honour\u00a0this legacy by promoting understanding, cooperation, and respect within our communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As we celebrate Merdeka, let us look beyond the festivities and remember the values that unite us as a nation. To me, Merdeka is more than celebrating Malaysia’s independence. It is a reminder of the freedom, opportunities, and responsibilities we have as Malaysians.\u00a0<\/p>

As an educator at DISTED College, Merdeka holds a special meaning for me. Every day, I have the privilege of teaching and guiding students from\u00a0different backgrounds. Seeing them learn, gain confidence, and work towards their dreams is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an educator.\u00a0<\/p>

I believe education\u00a0is an important part of being “Merdeka”.\u00a0It provides young people with the freedom to learn, think critically, express their ideas, and make their own choices.\u00a0As educators, our role\u00a0is not only to prepare students for examinations and future careers but also to nurture responsible, respectful, and caring individuals who can contribute positively to society.\u00a0<\/p>

Working with students also reminds me of the beauty of Malaysia’s diversity.\u00a0Although we come from different backgrounds, we are able to learn from one another, share experiences, and grow together.\u00a0This spirit of mutual respect and understanding reflects the values that have helped shape Malaysia into the nation it is today.\u00a0<\/p>

This Merdeka, I am grateful to play a small part in shaping the next generation. I hope our students will continue to embrace the values of unity, kindness, courage, and responsibility, and use their knowledge and talents to make a positive difference in their communities and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>
