Dear DISTED Community,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The College has just completed the trial and preparatory examinations for Cambridge A Level students who will be sitting for the formal A Level examinations in May 2026. In an era shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI), formal examinations are increasingly important, as they allow students to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0their understanding and ability to apply knowledge that has been genuinely learnt. The knowledge\u00a0acquired, whether with or without digital\u00a0assistance\u00a0during learning, is assessed in an examination environment without access to AI. We wish our students every success as they prepare for their upcoming A Level examinations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This also marks the formal completion of\u00a0Pre<\/span>\u2011University\u00a0programmes for students enrolled in Foundation, Cambridge A\u00a0Levels\u00a0and the South Australian Certificate of Education. Their achievements will be celebrated at the upcoming\u00a0Pre<\/span>\u2011University\u00a0Completion Ceremony, where students on the President\u2019s Honour List will be recognised for outstanding results.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

While celebrating our students\u2019 achievements and academic excellence, we\u00a0remain\u00a0mindful that we are living in a tumultuous global environment, with ongoing conflicts and resulting disruptions to global supply chains, particularly in energy. In response, DISTED College will be reducing shuttle journeys to minimise diesel consumption and will also be reducing electricity usage on campus. We encourage the DISTED community to do its part in conserving energy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Straits Quay waterfront in Penang was transformed into a vibrant centre for environmental awareness during the\u00a0<\/span>\u201cOur Power, Our Planet\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0Carnival, organised by\u00a0Persatuan\u00a0Pendidik\u00a0Lestari Hijau Pulau Pinang (GREW) and supported by the Penang State Education Department. The event brought together educators,\u00a0students\u00a0and members of the public to promote sustainability and responsible environmental practices within the community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

DISTED College was pleased to\u00a0participate\u00a0in the Community Market segment of the carnival. At the DISTED booth, staff members collaborated with students to present a\u00a0<\/span>Fashion Upcycle<\/span><\/i>\u00a0exhibition,\u00a0showcasing\u00a0creative wearable fashion made entirely from recycled materials. One of the highlight pieces was a striking gown featuring colourful floral designs crafted from repurposed plastics, bottle\u00a0caps\u00a0and discarded packaging. The exhibition\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0how sustainability and creativity can intersect, challenging\u00a0perceptions\u00a0that\u00a0eco<\/span>\u2011friendly\u00a0practices limit artistic expression.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Visitors to the booth were introduced to the idea that everyday waste can be transformed into meaningful fashion statements, reinforcing the message that sustainable choices can be both practical and aesthetically engaging.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Participation in the\u00a0<\/span>\u201cOur Power, Our Planet\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0carnival reflected DISTED College\u2019s commitment to environmental responsibility and community engagement. By working alongside educators, students and the wider public, the event fostered a collective sense of responsibility for protecting the Earth. Students from the School of Psychology and the School of Business and Hospitality recently\u00a0participated\u00a0in a Personal Financial Management talk aimed at strengthening their financial literacy and preparing them for\u00a0real<\/span>\u2011world\u00a0financial responsibilities. The session provided students with practical and relevant knowledge that supports informed financial\u00a0decision<\/span>\u2011making\u00a0beyond academic learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The talk focused on empowering students to take control of their financial future through effective budgeting,\u00a0saving\u00a0and responsible money management. Using relatable\u00a0real<\/span>\u2011life\u00a0examples, students were introduced to the \u201c3Ms\u201d of budgeting\u2014Mindset,\u00a0Money\u00a0and Management\u2014encouraging them to adopt a disciplined and intentional approach towards spending. The session also\u00a0emphasised\u00a0the importance of setting clear financial goals and aligning them with personal aspirations and future career plans.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Students gained valuable insights into key financial concepts such as managing bank accounts, understanding risk and return in\u00a0investments\u00a0and using credit responsibly. Discussions on common financial challenges, including debt management and financial\u00a0scams, helped raise awareness about making informed and cautious decisions in an increasingly digital financial landscape.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The session was highly interactive, prompting students to reflect on their own financial habits and\u00a0behaviours. Engagement was further enhanced through a fun and competitive Kahoot quiz, allowing students to test their understanding in an enjoyable and meaningful way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

DISTED College welcomed approximately 60\u00a0Pembimbing\u00a0Rakan\u00a0Sebaya\u00a0(PRS) students from SMJK Phor Tay for a PRS Leadership & Team Building Camp held on campus. The\u00a0half<\/span>\u2011day\u00a0programme\u00a0was collaboratively\u00a0organised\u00a0by the School of Psychology and the School of Business & Hospitality, with the aim of nurturing leadership qualities and strengthening teamwork among student leaders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Designed to provide an engaging and supportive learning environment, the camp focused on developing essential interpersonal and leadership skills. Through a series of interactive,\u00a0group<\/span>\u2011based\u00a0activities, participants were encouraged to\u00a0practise\u00a0effective communication,\u00a0collaboration\u00a0and\u00a0problem<\/span>\u2011solving\u00a0in team settings. These activities helped students build confidence, social\u00a0awareness\u00a0and responsibility\u2014important attributes for PRS members who play a key role in supporting their peers at school.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0programme\u00a0also\u00a0emphasised\u00a0emotional awareness and positive peer interaction. By actively\u00a0participating\u00a0in team activities, students were given opportunities to reflect on their personal strengths, work cooperatively with\u00a0others\u00a0and better understand the importance of empathy,\u00a0wellbeing\u00a0and mutual support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In celebration of International Women\u2019s Day, DISTED College took a moment to\u00a0recognise\u00a0and appreciate the dedication and contributions of its female staff members. As part of the initiative, roses were distributed as a small token of gratitude, followed by a brief wellbeing workshop conducted by the School of Psychology focusing on stress awareness and management.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The session introduced the idea that stress is a natural response when individuals feel overwhelmed or under pressure. Rather than viewing stress as a personal weakness, the workshop\u00a0emphasised\u00a0that it often serves as a signal from the mind and body that attention,\u00a0rest\u00a0or adjustment may be needed. This perspective encouraged participants to approach stress with greater\u00a0self<\/span>\u2011compassion\u00a0and understanding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Staff members also completed a short\u00a0self<\/span>\u2011reflection\u00a0using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS<\/span>\u201110). This activity invited participants to reflect on how stressful the past month had felt, helping them\u00a0recognise\u00a0patterns in their emotional and mental wellbeing. Such awareness can support individuals in\u00a0identifying\u00a0when it may be helpful to pause,\u00a0reset\u00a0and seek support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Several practical\u00a0stress<\/span>\u2011management\u00a0strategies were shared during the session. One key technique introduced was the 5<\/span>\u20114<\/span>\u20113<\/span>\u20112<\/span>\u20111 grounding method, a simple\u00a0sensory<\/span>\u2011based\u00a0approach that helps individuals reconnect with the present moment during periods of heightened stress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The workshop concluded with a brief\u00a0hypnosis<\/span>\u2011based\u00a0relaxation demonstration conducted by\u00a0Mr\u00a0Chew Yong Peng, a certified counsellor. The demonstration illustrated how guided focus can help promote calmness and relaxation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Overall, the session served as a gentle reminder that small pauses can play a meaningful role in supporting resilience and wellbeing amid daily responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>

In conjunction with International Women\u2019s Day, the MPSP Auditorium was transformed into a vibrant purple venue as women leaders, innovators and changemakers gathered to celebrate the strength,\u00a0resilience\u00a0and contributions of Malaysian women. The event served as a powerful platform to acknowledge women as sources of inspiration and aspiration across all sectors of society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The celebration was officiated by Yang Mulia Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah and featured initiatives led by the Penang Women\u2019s Development Corporation (PWDC), with support from the state government. Activities throughout the event included forums, community engagements and awareness campaigns aimed at highlighting the critical role women play in shaping Penang\u2019s social,\u00a0economic\u00a0and cultural development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These initiatives align closely with the Penang2030 vision of building a\u00a0family<\/span>\u2011focused,\u00a0green\u00a0and smart state with\u00a0equitable\u00a0opportunities for all. The event recognised women\u2019s diverse roles\u2014as leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, educators,\u00a0caregivers\u00a0and community builders\u2014whose dedication continues to strengthen communities and drive progress.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries worldwide, it is increasingly important for higher education institutions to ensure students are equipped with both strong theoretical knowledge and practical,\u00a0industry<\/span>\u2011relevant\u00a0skills. Recently, I completed the Pearson IT Specialist Artificial Intelligence (AI) course and successfully passed the certification examination. This experience\u00a0provided\u00a0valuable insight into how structured, applied AI learning can enhance students\u2019 preparedness for the rapidly evolving digital workforce.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Pearson IT Specialist AI curriculum introduces core AI concepts, including machine learning,\u00a0data<\/span>\u2011driven\u00a0decision<\/span>\u2011making, ethical considerations and\u00a0real<\/span>\u2011world\u00a0applications of AI technologies. More importantly, it places strong emphasis on\u00a0hands<\/span>\u2011on\u00a0learning, critical\u00a0thinking\u00a0and\u00a0problem<\/span>\u2011solving\u2014skills that are highly sought after in today\u2019s\u00a0technology<\/span>\u2011driven\u00a0economy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

At DISTED College, particularly within the Computer Science programmes, our\u00a0objective\u00a0is to bridge academic learning with industry expectations. Integrating the Pearson IT Specialist AI certification into the curriculum will provide students with the opportunity to earn an internationally recognised credential alongside their academic qualifications. This dual recognition not only strengthens students\u2019 technical competence but also enhances their employability,\u00a0confidence\u00a0and professional readiness as future AI practitioners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

April is\u00a0recognised\u00a0as Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to promoting understanding,\u00a0acceptance\u00a0and inclusion within the community. In support of this cause, DISTED Kelab\u00a0Penyayang, in collaboration with Universiti\u00a0Teknologi\u00a0MARA (UiTM) Kelab\u00a0Penyayang,\u00a0organised\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Autism Month with Smiles Project<\/span><\/i>\u00a0at the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The project aimed to foster awareness,\u00a0empathy\u00a0and meaningful interaction between students and children with autism through engaging creative and social activities. One of the main activities was collage making, where students worked closely with older autistic children in small groups. Using\u00a0colourful\u00a0paper, cloth pieces and various art materials, participants created artworks based on themes such as friendship,\u00a0happiness\u00a0and dreams. At the same time, another group of students conducted\u00a0face<\/span>\u2011painting\u00a0sessions with younger autistic children, creating a cheerful and welcoming environment. Teachers and volunteers were present throughout to provide guidance and encourage positive interactions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Following the activities, participants gathered for a Hari Raya lunch celebration. Sharing a meal\u00a0offered\u00a0opportunities for simple conversations and warm interactions, further strengthening social connections.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The project concluded with a photo session\u00a0showcasing\u00a0the completed collage artworks. Both DISTED and UiTM presented souvenirs and donations to NASOM as a gesture of appreciation. DISTED contributed three whiteboards funded through a March fundraising event, while UiTM donated clocks, mosquito spray,\u00a0paper\u00a0and batteries. NASOM expressed sincere appreciation for the visit,\u00a0support\u00a0and generous contributions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Overall, the project was a meaningful and rewarding experience that nurtured compassion,\u00a0inclusivity\u00a0and social responsibility among students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
