Dear DISTED Community,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The College has just completed the trial and preparatory examinations for Cambridge A Level students who will be sitting for the formal A Level examinations in May 2026. In an era shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI), formal examinations are increasingly important, as they allow students to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0their understanding and ability to apply knowledge that has been genuinely learnt. The knowledge\u00a0acquired, whether with or without digital\u00a0assistance\u00a0during learning, is assessed in an examination environment without access to AI. We wish our students every success as they prepare for their upcoming A Level examinations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This also marks the formal completion of\u00a0Pre\u2011University\u00a0programmes for students enrolled in Foundation, Cambridge A\u00a0Levels\u00a0and the South Australian Certificate of Education. Their achievements will be celebrated at the upcoming\u00a0Pre\u2011University\u00a0Completion Ceremony, where students on the President\u2019s Honour List will be recognised for outstanding results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

While celebrating our students\u2019 achievements and academic excellence, we\u00a0remain\u00a0mindful that we are living in a tumultuous global environment, with ongoing conflicts and resulting disruptions to global supply chains, particularly in energy. In response, DISTED College will be reducing shuttle journeys to minimise diesel consumption and will also be reducing electricity usage on campus. We encourage the DISTED community to do its part in conserving energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0Biology\u00a0field trip to the Penang Botanical Garden provided Foundation in Science students with a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with\u00a0real\u2011world\u00a0observation. Accompanied by their lecturer, Dr Kam Yew Chee, students explored the botanical garden and surrounding areas, including nature trails and a small river, as part of the FIS Biology II syllabus on biodiversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Throughout the visit, students\u00a0observed\u00a0a wide range of plant groups such as bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms in a natural environment. They also\u00a0encountered\u00a0insects, fish,\u00a0butterflies\u00a0and monkeys, offering firsthand exposure to ecosystems that are usually studied through textbooks. Lecturers guided discussions on plant characteristics, environmental\u00a0adaptation\u00a0and conservation, reinforcing academic concepts through direct observation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A key highlight of the trip was a\u00a0hands\u2011on\u00a0fishing activity by a nearby stream. While simple, the activity encouraged teamwork, critical\u00a0observation\u00a0and interaction with nature, reminding students of the close connection between humans and the natural world. Many students reflected on how stepping away from digital distractions helped them sharpen their observation skills and appreciate the environment more deeply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Beyond academic gains, the field trip strengthened friendships and fostered a sense of community among students. Walking under the sun, sharing\u00a0lunch\u00a0and learning together created lasting memories. Overall, the experience\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0the importance of experiential learning in science education, encouraging environmental awareness,\u00a0collaboration\u00a0and a deeper appreciation of biodiversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The School of Psychology hosted\u00a0Ms\u00a0Khaw Yin Yee, Founder of\u00a0Homeals\u00a0and ROKU The Taco Bar, for an entrepreneurship workshop conducted under PSY330 Career Development and Planning as part of the Industry Guest Lecturer Series.\u00a0Ms\u00a0Khaw was accompanied by her assistant, Nicolai, who contributed operational perspectives and reinforced the importance of teamwork and clearly defined roles in sustaining business performance. The session was attended by 30 psychology students and provided meaningful exposure to\u00a0real\u2011world\u00a0entrepreneurial practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Drawing from her journey as a\u00a0chef\u2011turned\u2011entrepreneur,\u00a0Ms\u00a0Khaw shared practical insights into building and sustaining a niche,\u00a0health\u2011focused\u00a0brand. Key areas discussed included strategic positioning, financial\u00a0management\u00a0and the importance of effective operational systems, offering students a realistic perspective on the challenges faced by business owners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of the highlights of the workshop was an interactive group activity where students were presented with realistic business scenarios, including managing\u00a0cash\u2011flow\u00a0shortages, addressing low sales conversion, resolving operational\u00a0breakdowns\u00a0and handling customer complaints. These discussions required students to think critically, make decisions under\u00a0pressure\u00a0and evaluate potential consequences\u2014mirroring\u00a0real\u2011world\u00a0entrepreneurial situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

More than a conventional lecture, the session\u00a0emphasised\u00a0experiential learning, enabling students to move beyond textbook knowledge and apply concepts in practical contexts. The workshop reinforced that professional development and career readiness extend beyond the classroom into\u00a0real\u2011world\u00a0problem\u2011solving\u00a0and\u00a0decision\u2011making.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Teaching observation plays a vital role in the continuous professional growth of educators. More than an evaluative exercise, it provides lecturers with the space to pause, reflect and engage in meaningful discussions about their classroom practices\u2014what is working well, areas for improvement and how students are responding to different teaching approaches. When conducted in a positive and supportive manner, teaching observation becomes a collaborative learning experience rather than a judgement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The\u00a0Secret to Workplace Success<\/i>\u00a0session was conducted as part of a Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) project aimed at preparing students for the realities of the modern workplace. Proposed to the management at DISTED College, the initiative was designed to help students reflect deeply on what employers truly look for beyond academic achievements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The session\u00a0emphasised\u00a0that while technical knowledge is important, qualities such as positive attitude, initiative, effective\u00a0communication\u00a0and\u00a0a strong sense\u00a0of responsibility often play a greater role in workplace success. These insights provided students with a clearer understanding of employer expectations as they prepare for life after graduation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The three\u2011hour session was\u00a0facilitated\u00a0by\u00a0Ms\u00a0Carmen Loo, an experienced HRDF\u2011Certified Trainer and Leadership and Communication Coach. One of the key highlights was a workstyle assessment, which encouraged students to examine their own working styles and\u00a0recognise\u00a0how these may evolve across\u00a0different stages\u00a0of their careers. Through guided discussions, students gained valuable insights into how everyday habits\u2014such as responding promptly, meeting\u00a0deadlines\u00a0and taking ownership of responsibilities\u2014can shape professional\u00a0perceptions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Overall, the session promoted greater\u00a0self\u2011awareness, emotional\u00a0intelligence\u00a0and a growth mindset among participants. Moving forward, the project aims to nurture graduates who are proactive,\u00a0adaptable\u00a0and committed to continuous learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The workshop concluded with a course evaluation, where students expressed satisfaction with the session. Electronic certificates of participation were issued to attendees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Mr. Ng Wei Xian holds a Master of Business Administration from INTI International University and a Bachelor of Marketing (Hons) from Universiti\u00a0Tunku\u00a0Abdul Rahman. He has teaching experience across diverse educational settings and is passionate about delivering student-centred, engaging, and supportive learning experiences. His strengths include lesson planning, curriculum delivery, classroom management, and student assessment, with a strong focus on student development both academically and personally. Beyond the classroom, Mr. Ng actively contributes to co-curricular activities and student mentoring. As a Taekwondo instructor, he guides students through training, grading, and competitions, nurturing discipline, resilience, and confidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Ms. Ruth\u00a0Ravandran\u00a0joins DISTED as a Lecturer in the School of Communication Arts and Multimedia. She holds a\u00a0Master\u2019s degree in Graphic Communication\u00a0from Universiti Sains Malaysia and brings extensive experience from international school environments. Ruth has taught Cambridge IGCSE English, Bahasa\u00a0Melayu, and humanities subjects, working with students from diverse backgrounds. Her teaching philosophy\u00a0emphasises\u00a0interactive, student-centred\u00a0learning supported by structured lesson design, effective assessment strategies, and real-world applications. In addition, her\u00a0expertise\u00a0in visual communication design\u2014particularly in typography, branding, and digital media\u2014enables her to integrate design thinking into teaching and learning practices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
