As we wrap up 2025, I find myself looking back on what has been an extraordinary year for education and for all of us who are part of this journey. This year reminded me why education matters so deeply, it changes lives. I have seen it happen time and again, and every story of transformation makes the work we do worthwhile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This DISTED Discourse issue is our 2025 Wrap-Up Edition, dedicated to reflection and appreciation. It is a moment to pause, celebrate achievements, and share insights before we step into a new year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of the things I feel most strongly about is building stronger connections with our alumni. They are not just graduates; they are part of our extended family. Their experiences and insights can inspire current students and help us create a richer learning community. Strengthening these relationships will be a priority as we move forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Technology has been a big part of this year\u2019s conversation, especially AI. It is exciting, but I believe we must never lose sight of the human element. Tutorials, discussions, and personal engagement matter more than ever. I have always believed that the best teachers are not necessarily the most brilliant minds, but those who care deeply and persist in inspiring their students. Those are the educators who leave a lasting impact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Looking ahead, we will focus on creating more personalised learning experiences, small group tutorials, work-based learning tailored to industry needs, and hybrid models that combine hands-on practice with digital flexibility. AI will have an important role to play, but its purpose is to enhance learning not to replace the human connection that makes education meaningful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As we reflect on the achievements and challenges of this year, one thing stands out: education shapes individuals and communities. It transforms futures. That is why, as we prepare for 2026, we must carry forward the lessons of 2025. Let\u2019s embrace innovation, but education is at its best when it remains personal, inspiring, and truly life changing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The DISTED College academic team focused heavily in 2025 on seamlessly integrating industry-relevant skills and real-world experiences into the curriculum. The year was marked by significant student achievements, dedicated faculty development, and a strong emphasis on holistic education and community engagement, ensuring our programs offer work-related assessments and remain current with industry demands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In August, the college conducted two in-house training sessions for staff focused on integrating values-based education and sustainability into the Outcome-Based Education framework (MQF2024), along with a workshop dedicated to the Code of Practice for Programme Accreditation (COPPA) 2nd Edition. The college continues to adapt its programs dynamically to meet evolving technological trends, ensuring education remains future-proof and relevant to industry demands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Students demonstrated outstanding academic results, notably in the Cambridge A-Level exams, and with degree and diploma students consistently graduating on time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Industry exposure was enhanced through a series of visits and talk sessions with various organizations, including the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIAM), Befrienders, The Gurney Bay Hotel, KW Packaging, PERKESO, and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Beyond academics, our students dedicated time to meaningful community service initiatives, including creating mental health awareness campaigns, participating in environmental protection efforts, and volunteering time to support underprivileged communities in Penang.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Students showcased their technical and creative prowess at events such as the Schola Hackathon and a professional, movie-style screening day for student video projects. Through the Speechcraft program and various leadership camps for secondary school students, DISTED successfully fostered confidence, communication skills, and essential teamwork abilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The academic team actively supported the marketing team throughout the year in promoting the college’s programmes and brand. Furthermore, the team was instrumental in conducting engaging educational camps specifically tailored for visiting students from Thailand, Hong Kong, and China, enriching the college’s international engagement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 2025, DISTED College established new partnerships to provide diverse pathway options for our students. These included collaborations with the\u202fSingapore Institute of Management (SIM),\u202fNuMed Malaysia, the\u202fUniversity of Hertfordshire, and\u202fNorthumbria University among others in broadening our students’ horizons for further studies abroad and domestically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The year 2025 was truly a testament to growth, resilience, and community at DISTED College. Lecturers shared the privilege of witnessing students\u2019 personal and intellectual development, describing a learning environment filled with encouragement and warmth. Students expressed heartfelt gratitude for the supportive and approachable lecturers, the benefit of small class sizes that allow for individual attention, and the hands-on experiences that have prepared them for the professional world. Convocation 2025 in October was a proud and memorable moment, celebrating the culmination of hard work and the beginning of exciting new journeys for our graduates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our learners achieved exceptional results, with many securing scholarships and placements at prestigious universities worldwide. These accomplishments reflect their commitment and the unwavering support of our dedicated faculty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The year was not without challenges, particularly in maintaining engagement and performance amid shifting educational trends. Through innovative teaching strategies, enhanced digital learning platforms, and personalised student support, we successfully navigated these hurdles and ensured a seamless learning experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A highlight of 2025 was the active involvement of Kelab Penyayang, which organised meaningful community service initiatives such as charity drives, welfare home visits, and fundraising events. The year 2024 marked a significant milestone for DISTED College with the launch of the School of Communication, Arts and Multimedia (SCM). As the newest academic unit, we began with three programmes: Diploma in Mass Communication, Diploma in Creative Multimedia, and Bachelor of Communication (Media Studies) (Hons). With a small but committed team of eight, we worked diligently to establish the school\u2019s identity and strengthen the visibility of our programmes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Throughout 2025, SCM organised a series of signature events to nurture student creativity and engagement, including the MicDrop Challenge, Leadership Camp: Squid Games Challenge, and the intercultural campaign Jom Balik Kampung! These activities encouraged students to explore broadcasting, multimedia, and creative arts expression in authentic and meaningful ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our outreach efforts extended to several schools across Penang, where workshops on 3D design, graphic design, painting (Catan), cyberbullying awareness, photography, and communication skills provided valuable exposure to school-leavers. These initiatives helped cultivate awareness of media-related fields while strengthening our ties with the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Within the school, we prioritised the well-being and professional development of both staff and students by conducting internal workshops on Generative AI in Education, Referencing, NVivo, and other academic-related skills. The establishment of the DC Live Club further empowered students to transform their ideas into practice, leading to the successful production of 14 podcast episodes throughout the year. Our students also served as part of the production crew for the college\u2019s honourable graduation ceremony, gaining valuable real-world experience in event management and media operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Quality Education and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, SCM remains committed to providing knowledge, skills, and activities grounded in integrity, inclusivity, and responsible media education.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As we look ahead to 2026, we carry forward the lessons, challenges, and achievements of the year with renewed determination to produce holistic and industry-ready graduates in media and communication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The year began with the APEX Bootcamp Closing Ceremony, marking the successful completion of a two-year programme under the Penang Math Platform. Students strengthened their computational thinking and digital literacy skills. Soon after, our students excelled at Jabil\u2019s Early Career Program Bootcamp 2.0, earning First Runner-Up in a competitive case study challenge focused on Data Science, SAP, and AI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Educators embraced technology through the AI Tools for Teaching and Assessment Workshop, gaining hands-on experience with Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, and Canva AI. Creative classroom strategies such as the Cybersecurity \u201cWould You Rather\u201d activity and the Tech & English Learning Camp reinforced our student-centred approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

On the technology frontier, students explored Google Gemini and participated in USM TechFest, engaging with Google Cloud, TensorFlow, and Flutter. Our emphasis on Python programming as a universal skill further empowered learners to innovate across disciplines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We concluded the year by celebrating academic excellence with Lim Hao Zhi, recipient of the President\u2019s Trophy. From industry partnerships to global tech exposure, 2025 has been a year of growth and impact. The year 2025 has been an impactful and active one for the School of Psychology at DISTED, marked by strong collaborations, impactful community engagement, and extensive youth outreach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Academically, professional development was strengthened through a partnership with SUN Education Group, hosting Prof. Bishop in October and Lucinda Chappel in November, both offering valuable global perspectives in psychology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Industry exposure was another important highlight, with combined career visits to Keysight Technologies and Gurney Bay Hotel. These visits provided students with insights into workplace expectations, hiring requirements, and potential job opportunities, helping them prepare for future career pathways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Our commitment to community mental health continued steadily. Collaborations with Penang Shine Like Stars, LemmeLearn, participation in a forum organised by Befrienders, and involvement in the D\u2019Home mental health booth at Sunshine Central and the Wellness Morning programme gave students opportunities to engage the public in psychoeducation and awareness activities. This was especially timely given the rise of mental health concerns in Malaysia this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Youth outreach remained a significant focus, with workshops, talks, and camps conducted across various schools and community groups. Key engagements included SMJK Union\u2019s PRS Adoption and leadership programmes, SMJK PCGHS\u2019s multi-week sessions, SMJK Chung Ling\u2019s talk, and St. Xavier\u2019s Camp. These platforms allowed students to practise leadership, communication, and facilitation in real-life settings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Despite challenges such as increasing mental health needs and tight schedules, 2025 strengthened our resilience and unity as a school community. The year\u2019s experiences have shaped our growth and reaffirmed our commitment to advancing psychological knowledge, well-being, and community impact moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The year 2025 has been a transformative one for the School of Business and Hospitality at DISTED College. Our focus has been firmly on bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world application, ensuring our graduates are not just job-ready, but future-proof.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Academic & Curriculum Developments<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The rollout of the Bachelor in Accounting (Honours) program was a highlight, with the first batch of students entering the program in August 2025. This seamless bundle program, in collaboration with\u202fHELP University, offers students a direct pathway to a degree. Graduates are eligible for substantial exemptions from professional bodies like ISCA and ACCA, positioning them for success in the accounting profession.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

To adapt to evolving technological trends, we introduced elements of generative AI into our diploma programs. This ensures our business graduates are equipped with relevant skills for the modern, tech-driven workplace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We also integrated ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting into the Diploma in Accounting programs, highlighting the accountant’s vital role in sustainable business practices under new IFRS standards. Our collaboration with the Green Educator\u2019s Workgroup (GREW) has strengthened our Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) initiatives for students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Practical Exposure & Student Engagement<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Faculty arranged insightful industry visits for students. Business Studies students gained valuable exposure to operations at The Gurney Bay Hotel and the Social Security Organization (PERKESO) office in Penang, connecting classroom knowledge to organizational culture and leadership in action. Students also gain insights from guest lectures by alumni and industry representatives. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Entrepreneurship was in action as well. Students in the Bizquad Co. club managed a successful sales booth during the on-campus Thai Camp event, gaining hands-on experience in essential business skills like event management, marketing, pricing, and inventory control. In March 2025, the school also hosted a successful Business Entrepreneurship Competition, where high school students developed and pitched sustainable business ideas to a panel of judges, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This past year has been a journey of growth and innovation for DISTED College, with professional development taking centre stage. One of the most impactful initiatives was a comprehensive training programme designed to empower lecturers and elevate teaching standards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The programme went far beyond basic onboarding. It equipped academic staff with a deep understanding of national education standards, college policies, and ISO quality benchmarks. As the Student Representative Council (SRC) 2025 term draws to a close, I am proud of what we have accomplished together as a council and as a student body. This year has truly reflected collaboration, determination, and our shared belief that student voices matter. When I first assumed the role of SRC President, I promised to make our council more accountable, visible, and impactful. Today, I am honoured to share the milestones we achieved in pursuit of that mission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of our most significant accomplishments was the successful implementation of the Student Feedback System. For years, students sought a structured and transparent platform to voice concerns, suggestions, and ideas. In 2025, we made that vision a reality. The system now serves as a direct bridge between students and the SRC, ensuring every concern is heard, addressed, and channelled to the right department. This marks a cultural shift towards open communication and student empowerment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We also initiated regular management meetings with the school administration, creating a stronger connection between students and decision-makers. These sessions resulted in tangible improvements and strengthened the SRC-management relationship, ensuring decisions better reflect student needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Financial sustainability was another major achievement. By introducing a reliable fundraising system, the SRC secured resources to support student initiatives and organise meaningful events, paving the way for future councils to thrive without financial constraints.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This year was also vibrant with student life. Tournament Month brought healthy competition through badminton and chess tournaments, fostering camaraderie and teamwork. We introduced DISTED\u2019s first-ever music festival, DISTED GOT TALENT, a celebration of creativity and unity. Our first off-campus Prom Night at The Millen Hotel, themed Yule Ball, was an unforgettable evening of elegance and excitement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

To close the year in style, we will host our first off-campus Prom Night at the five-star The Millen Hotel. With the enchanting theme Yule Ball, it promises to be an evening filled with elegance, excitement and magic. It will be a night that becomes one of the most cherished highlights of the college journey.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Each achievement reflects not only the efforts of the SRC but also the trust and spirit of the student body. Together, we built systems, strengthened relationships, and created memories that will last for years to come.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 2025, the Student Experience Department continued to elevate the overall student journey through meaningful programmes, international engagement, and enhanced residential facilities. One of the major highlights was the English Adventure Camp, designed for international secondary school students from Thailand and China. Throughout the camp, students attended classes and workshops at DISTED College while staying at SPACE Residence. The programme was enriched by the active participation of DISTED students, who joined as buddies during ice-breaking sessions, heritage tours, and other activities, fostering cross-cultural connections. This successful integration has paved the way for establishing a formal buddy programme in future camps. The camp provided a dynamic environment for learning English through real-life interaction, fun games, cultural activities, and outdoor adventures, allowing participants to build confidence while experiencing Malaysia\u2019s rich cultural diversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The department also successfully piloted DISTED\u2019s first-ever 3 Days 2 Nights Team Building and Leadership Camp at Meru Valley Resort, initially launched with the Student Representative Council (SRC). With the theme \u201cFrom Me to We\u201d, the camp aimed to strengthen teamwork, communication, and leadership qualities. Throughout the programme, SRC members participated in workshops, reflective sessions, and outdoor challenges that encouraged them to step beyond their comfort zones, resulting in stronger bonds and a clearer understanding of collaborative leadership. Building on this successful trial, the department targets to open the 2026 leadership camp to scholarship recipients and the new batch of SRC members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In addition to programme-based initiatives, 2025 saw significant improvements within SPACE Residence, reflecting our commitment to a supportive living environment. A newly renovated common space now features a brand-new 24\/7 self-service laundry alongside furnished seating areas, providing students with a convenient and conducive place for both daily chores and social interaction. This versatile space has been thoughtfully designed to serve as a vibrant hub where residents can connect with each other and as a quiet area for individual or group study. Furthermore, the newly refurbished Level 5 Short-Stay Rooms, launched in December 2024, offer a cosy, home-like atmosphere. Prioritising hospitality, these rooms are available for short-term stays, ideal for residents’ family and friends, alumni, and visitors exploring Penang’s UNESCO heritage. Guests are welcomed with a card detailing house rules, a Penang tourist map, snacks, and toiletries, ensuring a comfortable and valuable experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Altogether, 2025 marked a year of growth, innovation, and renewed commitment to student development at DISTED. Through immersive international experiences, leadership programme pilots, and continuous enhancements to residential facilities and hospitality, the Student Experience Department continues to cultivate a vibrant, inclusive, and supportive campus environment for all students and guests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
