Charles Darwin, revered as the father of evolution, introduced the idea that all life shares a common ancestor and evolves through natural selection. This mechanism ensures that traits favourable for survival are passed on, while less favourable traits diminish\u2014a process succinctly captured by the phrase “survival of the fittest.”<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

                  A striking example of evolution in action is the SARS-CoV-2 virus, responsible for COVID-19. Since the pandemic began, evolutionary pressures have led to the emergence of significant variants like Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Omicron. These changes occur due to mutations\u2014alterations in the virus’s nucleotide sequence. Each variant brings new characteristics, often marked by increased transmissibility, immune evasion, or other competitive advantages.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

                  Beyond biology, the theory of evolution offers a profound metaphor for personal growth and resilience. Just as organisms adapt to survive environmental challenges, we too must evolve when faced with obstacles. Change and adaptability are the keys to not only surviving but thriving in difficult times. Challenges can serve as catalysts for transformation, encouraging us to emerge stronger and more capable.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

                  Internships are an essential component of diploma studies, offering students like Yu Ze Hang, a Diploma in Computer Science student at DISTED College, the opportunity to apply academic knowledge in real-world settings. Recently completing his internship at Infinity Network Security Sdn. Bhd. under the guidance of Mr. Vincent Ho, Yu Ze Hang describes this hands-on experience as transformative.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

                  \u201cDuring my internship at Infinity Network Security in Penang, I gained hands-on experience in various aspects of cybersecurity, including risk assessment, network security, and incident response,\u201d he shared.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

                  Through daily responsibilities like identifying vulnerabilities, managing hardware, and implementing security protocols, Yu Ze Hang was immersed in real-time problem-solving and gained exposure to the latest cybersecurity tools and methods.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

                  Internships bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical application, enhancing technical skills and preparing students for the evolving job market.                   This year, DISTED campus came alive with the vibrant colours and festivities of Diwali as the annual Diwali Mela took centre stage! Organised by DISTED College in collaboration with the Indian Cultural Society (ICS), the event brought together students, faculty, and staff for an afternoon of celebration, community, and cultural exchange.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

                  One of the key highlights of the event was the spectacular dance and music performances. Talented students graced the stage with a mix of traditional and contemporary dances, while soulful singing performances filled the air with festive melodies. These lively displays beautifully captured the essence of Diwali, celebrating joy, unity, and cultural diversity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

                  Adding to the excitement was the Best Dressed Contest, where students and staff proudly showcased their finest ethnic attire, with winners taking home exciting prizes. The celebration also featured a delicious Diwali lunch buffet, offering a delightful spread that added flavor to the festivities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

                  A Code Jam is typically a competitive coding event where participants work to solve complex programming challenges within a limited time frame. These events are well-known for fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and programming proficiency in a dynamic environment. To bring the benefits of a Code Jam into the classroom, a smaller-scale version of this activity was designed for students, aimed at reinforcing their understanding of fundamental programming concepts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

                  In this classroom Code Jam, students were divided into small teams and tasked with solving progressively challenging problems involving specific programming languages on the whiteboard. While students typically write code using computers, this activity encouraged them to code manually \u2014 a critical skill for exams where an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is unavailable.                   This smaller-scale Code Jam offered a fun and engaging way to enhance programming skills, while encouraging active participation and peer learning. By moving away from the screen, students had the chance to focus more on logic and structure, becoming more confident in their ability to manually write correct and efficient code. Importantly, the activity also helped eradicate the misconception that coding is inherently difficult by breaking down challenges into manageable steps and fostering a supportive environment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

                  Through the process, students strengthened both their programming knowledge and soft skills like communication and teamwork, making it a highly effective and enjoyable learning experience.
