Staff badminton champions

DISTED College staff association, known as the Social, Motivational and Recreational Team (SMART), held a badminton competition for its members to promote healthy living, fraternity and invigorate the college’s silver jubilee celebration spirit.

“This year, SMART introduces the DISTED 25th Fitness Fanatics programme which leads to a series of activities to boost the physical fitness and mental agility of our members. 

“The programme is also a contribution to the commemoration of our college’s 25th anniversary. We like the staff to come together to for good time of sporting fun as we rejoice in the success of DISTED in educating young minds for a quarter of a century,” said SMART vice-president and lecturer Lee Heng Wei. 

“The staff badminton competition held on 27 July was the first activity under the fitness promotion programme. 

“The competition too was a chance to unearth new talents in the game and celebrate those with ‘Lee Chong Wei’ potential. 

“It was played in the Sudirman Cup style on a round-robin basis where the winning team was the group who won the most matches,” he explained. 

Celebrating a triumphant moment in the badminton event was commis cook Lex Lim Jia Chun who emerged champion in the men’s singles and mixed doubles as well as first runner-up in the men’s doubles.

The badminton competitors represented their respective SMART teams which comprise DISTED 2525 (led by lecturer Kong Kai Yuen), DISTED 25 Roars (headed by lecturer Zaki Zakaria), DISTED Shines 25 (led by marketing executive Ivan Ooi Wee Liang) and 25 Party on DISTED (headed by library assistant Saravanan Karealim). 

They earned points for their teams as part of a year-long series of group challenges organized by SMART where they have to fight it out to be the overall champion group.

Lecturer Elaine Chan Wai Kuen edged her way to be the women's doubles champion in the DISTED staff badminton competition.
