Badminton collegiality

Competitive high spirits mellowed by a sense of fraternity dominated the atmosphere of the DISTED College staff badminton matches.

The event saw the staff competing in men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

Organized by the staff association known as the Social, Motivational and Recreational Team (SMART), the collegial tournament was one of the many year-long team competitions for its members.

The SMART members have been divided into 4 clans for group challenge comprising Green Aliens, Pink Panthers, Yellow Submarine and Blue Lagoon.

The clans have to fight it out in a series of activities and the group achieving the highest points will be declared the winner when the current SMART committee tenure ends.

Gathered for a good time at the collegial badminton competition are DISTED staff (from left) Doris Tan Hong Hui, Jenny Chew Saw Chin, Tong Pei Sun, Elaine Chan Wai Kuen, Fairunizan Akbar Malik, Kalaiselvan Rajamanickam, Khor Ee Keat and umpire Farhath Asilah Abdul Gafoor (seated).

“Badminton is an intense sport that needs good skills and physical stamina. Hence, this fraternal championship is to promote a healthy lifestyle,” said SMART vice-president Fairunizan Akbar Malik, who is also DISTED librarian.

“The event also brings us together for a great time of fellowship,” she added.

Lecturers Elaine Chan Wai Kuen and Tong Pei Sun of the Yellow Submarine clan won the women’s team event.

“We had a good game and a good time of fostering closer relationships. Good teamwork gave us the winning edge,” Elaine said.

Tong added: “Good strategy was the other factor.”

Tan Chooi Ee of the Blue Lagoon clan won the women's singles title.

SMART secretary Ang Choo Ling said other sporting events on the anvil included table tennis, basketball, chess, carom and darts.

“The games are to create fun and laughter as all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

“The participants can enjoy the feel of adrenalin rushing through their veins, and sweat oozing from their pores, which is a healthy exercise!” she said.

“Surely, they’ll also savour the thrill of anticipating the opponents’ next move and strategizing to counter attack them,” Ang added.
