Freshies celebrate camaraderie

Starting college education is an exciting adventure with a vista of enriching experiences.

“I’ve made new friends and that’s a joy. The lecturers are nice and some are even funny, making their lessons interesting,” said Syamil Azizi@Pau, a new South Australian Matriculation (SAM) student at DISTED College.

“SAM is exciting as it has coursework with varied learning activities,” he said.

“College life is great! I’m allowed to be at ease with casual wear and need not be in uniform like in school,” Syamil said.

His course mate Irene Lee agreed: “At college, I’ve greater freedom to express myself and be happy with the way I am.”

“Compared to at school, there’re less stringent rules here about personal choice of dressing and grooming,” she said.

But higher education has its challenges too that need adaptation.

“Studying at college is hectic. Classes are longer and the coursework is demanding,” said SAM student Yeap Yee Chiun.

“My New Year resolution is to work hard and study smart.

“I’m happy to be at DISTED. It provides a good learning environment with friendly people around,” she added.

The new students of January intake celebrated the joy of journeying into higher education at the orientation party hosted by the college on 6 January 2010.

Organized by the student affairs department and the Students Representative Council (SRC), the barbeque-cum-karaoke do saw the students having a whale of time amidst fun and laughter.

“This event is to encourage the new students to mingle around and build friendships that will make their stay at the college meaningful and memorable,” said SRC member Nurfayiza Mohd. Ismail, who is in charge of student welfare and spiritual well-being.

“It’s a night of entertainment to let their hair down in fellowship and singing,” she said.

“We also have the opportunity to gather their feedback on the orientation activities and their ideas on improving services for students.

“It’s enjoyable networking with these new college mates and helping them to feel at home here,” Nurfayiza said.
