Exploring options for your future

School leavers and parents found out more about higher education pathways and career options at the DISTED College Open Day. 

The college’s lecturers were on hand to provide guidance on choosing suitable programmes to suit the students’ vocational aspirations during the event held on 19 and 20 December 2009. 

The visitors also attended informative talks on pre-university studies, business, hospitality management, psychology, computer science, IT and engineering. 

Penang Hospital senior consultant psychiatrist Dr Lai Fong Hwa spoke about the impact of psychology on life and work which indicated the increasing demand for psychology-trained personnel and the important roles of psychologists in society including in commerce and industry. 

Other activities include psychological testing, electronics workshop and campus walkabout to view the college’s facilities.

“DISTED provides a brand of education that is excellent, relevant and complete to ready students for challenges and new opportunities ahead,” said DISTED president Dr Koo Wee Kor. 

“We’ve Industry Advisory Panels for us to keep closer touch with industry players so as to make our programmes industry-relevant and mould students to be more job-ready,” he said. 

The college marked 15 years of teaching excellence in the Cambridge A-Level, and 22 years in the South Australian Matriculation. 

“We conduct the A-Level in 2 modes. DISTED is most likely the only college in the country to offer the unique 11-month intensive and fast-track A-Level programme where bright students gain the edge of entering university earlier, saving time and money,” said Dr Teo Soon Beng, School of Pre-University Studies head. 

“Students who prefer a more ‘leisurely pace’ may opt for the 18-month programme,” he said.

DISTED introduced 2 new programmes for its next intake on 4 January. 

“The Certificate in Hotel Operations provides students with 1 SPM credit a broad-based experiential learning in hospitality practices, procedures and skills, event management and culinary arts,” said Susie Khoo, School of Hospitality Management head. 

Computer science programme coordinator Jayaeswari Sangaralingam said: “The Diploma in Business IT is geared to mould computing expertise for the business enterprise.” 

A new scholarship scheme, the Sports Excellence Scholarship, is specifically for students who excel in sports, at least at the state level, prior to or while studying at the college. 

Merit scholarships are open to SPM/O-Level achievers for pursuing pre-university and diploma courses. Degree and honour scholarships are also available to bright and deserving students. 

DISTED pre-university and diploma students who subsequently continue their degree studies at the college will be bestowed RM1,000 to RM3,000 loyalty rewards and RM3,000 performance awards.
