KOLEJ DISTED-STAMFORD NEWS Stories have healing powers Stories have healing powers. They can be used to unravel and address issues and problems that one encounters.“Stories have therapeutic use for individuals, family and groups,” said Alex Chew, a personal and professional development consultant with over 21 years experience.“The power of the story is immense and has been central to our human evolution,” he said.
Alex conducted a workshop on the therapeutic use of stories to facilitate healing and growth for frontline practitioners and caregivers at DISTED College on 28 June 2009.The training was part of the personal and professional development programme (CPPD) offered by the college for the practitioners to update and develop their skills and knowledge in meeting their professional responsibilities.“As stories have universal healing and growth-promoting powers, their therapeutic applications are wide ranging and diverse.“They can be used for emotional and psychological assessment, development of self-esteem, psychological adaptation, problem solving, search for meaning, life review etc.,” said Alex, a retired senior lecturer at Thames Valley University, and former mental health and MA counselling thesis supervisor at University of Hertfordshire, UK.
He taught the participants the facilitative skills of therapeutic story-making and telling for a wide range of problem or need contexts and client groups. “Through crafting, sharing and listening to stories which have the potential to activate the healing process from within, you can help people to work through the difficulties and challenges they face,” he said.
