Training for student office bearers

Good principles of governance should be inculcated in student office bearers when moulding their leadership qualities.

“The good values and organizational skills that they’ve picked up through running clubs and societies in school are useful and practicable when they move on to institutions of higher learning and subsequently, community involvement,” said Jimmy Quek Lian Hock, SMK Bagan Jaya senior assistant for co-curriculum.

“Training is needed to increase their awareness and knowledge in proper management of school organizations such as meeting procedures and financial accountability,” he said.

Jimmy accompanied his 84 student office bearers from 29 clubs, societies and uniformed groups to an organizational governance workshop conducted at DISTED College on 30 May 2009 by the college’s business development and quality assurance manager Josephine Chan Ie Lyn.

“This workshop is to hone the skills of our student leaders in writing meeting minutes and keeping organizational accounts as well as to instill greater awareness about their roles and responsibilities,” Jimmy said.

“As most of them are fifth formers, it’s also a good opportunity to expose them to the good college environment at DISTED,” he added.

Love Nature Society chairperson Ooi Jie Ru said: “The training will help us to manage our clubs and societies more effectively according to proper procedures.”

“It’s also a happy gathering for all of us who lead the various organizations to foster camaraderie and share an exciting learning experience,” said the fifth former.

School Co-operative treasurer Ang Wei Ping was glad to have attended the event.

“I’m excited as this is my first time in a training on keeping organizational accounts,” she said.

“Proper and transparent keeping of accounts is an integral part of a treasurer’s responsibility and accountability,” Ang added.
