Lim Hong Zhec – 2016 SACE International Achiever

In January 2016, Lim Hong Zhec, a former student of SMJK Jit Sin of Bukit Mertajam, joined #DISTEDCollege‘s SACE International programme with a view to pursue his further studies in a recognised undergraduate programme upon completion of his pre-university studies.

Now, not only have Lim completed his studies in the #SACEInternational programme, but he has also emerged as the best among the 2016 top achievers. With an ATAR score of 95.40, Lim is also the receipient of a subject merit award for his exceptional performance in the Specialist Mathematics subject.

DISTED would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Lim, and all the other 2016 top achievers of the SACE International programme on their success!

DISTED College Inks Pioneering Memorandum of Agreement With Japan’s Leading Toyohashi University of Technology

The signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between DISTED College and Toyohashi University of Technology took place on 18th December 2016 at the Yeap Chor Ee Heritage Campus at DISTED College in Penang.

Dr Seah Soo Aun, President and CEO of DISTED College and Dr Takashi Onishi, President of Toyohashi University of Technology and the Science Council of Japan initiated the agreement respectively.

Other distinguished guests witnessing the MOA signing included Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, as Chairman of Wawasan Education Foundation and Pro-Chancellor of Wawasan Open University. Also in attendance was DISTED College’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Datuk Seri Stephen Yeap, as well as industry and academic leaders.

“The MOA provides prospective students from DISTED’s School of Computing and Engineering diploma programme a direct articulation option to Japan’s distinguish Toyohashi University of Technology and many other Japanese universities to earn a bachelor’s degree,” Dr Seah said during his speech.

“More specifically, it’s the first of such transfer programme between a Malaysian private institution of higher learning and a Japanese university and is opened to all Malaysian and international students who wish to pursue their studies in the field of Computing and Electronic Engineering and earn an undergraduate or even a postgraduate qualification in Japan,” he continued.

Students under this DISTED Japanese Transfer Programme will complete their 3-year Diploma in Computer Science or Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering to articulate in to Toyohashi University’s computing or electronic engineering degree programme. Students will embark on two (2) more years to complete the programme in Japan.

In addition to that, DISTED will establish a DISTED Scholarship and Bursary Award fund to further encourage prospective students to pursue this prestigious programme at DISTED College.

DISTED College 70’s Retro Annual Dinner

DISTED College held its Annual Staff Dinner on 26th November, at the Hotel Royal Penang in appreciation of the hard work and commitment of its staff throughout the year.

Colleagues and teammates took the opportunity to walk down memory lane, dressing up in their best 70’s retro style outfit to the likes of ABBA, Queens and The Bee Gees.

Distinguished guest and director Tan Sri Dr Chin Fook Weng delivered his goodwill message and said that DISTED College functions as a not-for-profit, self-financing college in which the net earnings are retained in the business for the benefit of both staffs and students.

Tan Sri Dr Chin also expressed his appreciation towards the committee for the dedication and effort they had put forth in this year’s annual dinner.

Next was Dr Seah’s enigmatic speech and it was indeed a heartfelt and profound one. “Employees are the assets and pillars that make DISTED the pioneer 6-star rating education provider in the region,” Dr Seah Soo Aun, President and CEO of DISTED College said during his opening remark.  In addition, Dr Seah mentioned that the year 2016 had been a challenging but fruitful year and staff will be awarded a year-end bonus in appreciation for a collective job well done.

With no exceptions, the Long-Years’ service award were presented to Mr Lee Kor Yong and Mr Khor Ee Keat for their 20 and 10 years of outstanding service and dedication to DISTED College respectively.

Certificates of appreciation were also presented to staffs for their significant contribution and achievement in guiding Chung Ling High School in the 2016 Young Enterprise Programme champion by AMCHAM (American Malaysia Chamber of Commerce Malaysia).

Members and Committees of DISTED College’s clubs and societies were also presented with certificates of appreciation for their annual outstanding performances.

Other event highlights included talent performances, table games and lucky draws in which Dr Gwee Sai Ling emerged the luckiest one of the night who walked away with the Grand Prize, a Samsung LED TV.

Last but not least, Dr Tan Fuyi and Ms Diana Quah were crowned Mr & Ms Retro DISTED 2016 through the likes of their amazing catwalk, charming personality and most retro outfit. It was indeed a great memorable night for all and a splendid way to end 2016 with a bang!

Students Glow in style on DISTED OSCARS Themed Prom Night

Sparkle in style with glamour gowns and dandy suits, DISTED College’s Glowing OSCARS themed prom night took place at Jen Hotel, Penang on 18th November.

Distinguished guests included Dr Seah Soo Aun, President and CEO of DISTED College and Dr Liew Yueah Cin, Director of Academic Affairs and also being the judges of the night to decide who should be the king and queen of the night.

The panel of judges voted Ms Carmen to be the Prom Queen and Mr Michael Timothy Tyson was selected to be the Prom King.

Other winners included Mr Fabulous-Mr Shiva, Ms Fabulous-Tato, Lou Si Mon(Esther), Best Smile -Ms Gaverlia Phan, Joker of the night – Ms Krishy, Lady Gaga award – Ms Angela and lastly Role Model – Mr Chayakorn Suwannachot(Bryan).

DISTED College lights up the lamp for Deepavali

The college held a Deepavali luncheon for its staff at the school multi-purpose hall with an array of scrumptious dishes. The President and CEO of DISTED College Dr Seah Soo Aun together with his Hindu staff gathered around the kolam and lit up the lamp to mark the triumph of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance. “Next year (2017) would be a very challenging year for us due to current market sentiment, but we must live up to our promises to deliver quality education as expected and provide the utmost services to our students,” he said. “May the light of Deepavali illuminate us the way to peace, harmony and success.” he continued.

LEAP Challenge by ASTI (The Association of Science, Technology and Innovation)

The Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) in collaboration with #LifeAcademy is organising the LEAP Challenge#DISTEDCollege. The event is to teach secondary students some innovative techniques, advanced thinking and creative problem solving skills that will lead to their own inventions.

The event packs with a wide range of practical ideas and strategies for enriching and immersing the students with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics.
