This is the 3rd time #SPACE DISTED’s students hostel practices Fire Drill to make sure all students and staff are well-prepared for the emergency procedures.
It’s Event Day at DISTED College. DISTED will be hosting three events concurrently on 28th April namely the 2nd DISTED Culinary Challenge 2018, Mathematical & Science Olympiad Contest and Fun Psychology Workshop. All events are Free of Charge and is open to secondary school students in the Northern Region.
The DISTED Culinary Challenge 2018 organised by the School of Hospitality Management will be kicking off with a preliminary round of Burger Master Challenge on 28th April 2018, which will see all participants contesting in a friendly knock-out system. Winners of the preliminary round shall qualify for the Grand Finale on 12th May 2018.
The contest will be held at DISTED School of Hospitality Management, located at 7 China Street Ghaut, 10300 Penang from 8am – 5pm.
“This is an opportunity for young and talented student chefs to demonstrate their skills and culinary knowledge, pitting against each other to win the grand prize,” said Ms Susie Khoo, Head of School of Hospitality Management.

Next, calling all Mathematical geeks out there! The School of Pre-University is cordially inviting all secondary students aged 14 – 17 years old to join and unleashed one’s math ability and potential through the Mathematical Olympiad Contest. The contest will take place at DISTED Yeap Chor Ee Heritage Campus located at 340, Macalister Road, 10350, Penang from 8:30am – 1pm.
“We are delighted to announce this mathematical contest for secondary students in the region as it provides an important opportunity to encourage youth to solve challenging problems with mathematics and stand a chance to win great prizes,” said Dr Loo Ai Yin, Head of School of Pre-University.

Beside these two competitions, DISTED School of Psychology is pleased to organise an event called “Your Brilliant Mind, Let it Shine!”. It is a workshop for secondary students and their friends and family to explore the real psychology world and participate in the interactive activities which utilise the concepts of psychology. The event will take place at DISTED Yeap Chor Ee Heritage Campus located at 340, Macalister Road, 10350, Penang from 8:30am – 4pm.
“Besides station games, other event highlights include talks by invited guest speakers Ms. Sherine, Consultant Child Developmental Psychologist from Gleneagles Medical Centre Penang, Dr Prihadi Kususanto, Forensic Psychology lecturer from HELP University and Ms Silviana Bonadei, Special Educator from 2-way Centre Penang,” Ms Soo Hoo Pei Ying, programme coordinator of School of Psychology said.

Some 80 students attend the programme briefing of A-Level, SACE International and CIE (Certificate of Intensive English) today at #DISTEDCollege.
At the briefing, students get to meet respective head of school and programme coordinators. The briefing ended with campus walkabout to familiarise campus facilities.
The academic orientation for all programmes newcomers will be take place on April 3rd, Tuesday, 9am at DISTED Heritage Hall.
The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between LiFE Academy and the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH), Penang Chapter, took place on 9th March, 2018 at the Function Room M3 at VOUK Hotel Suites, Penang.
Dr Seah Soo Aun, President and CEO of DISTED College, representing LiFE Academy, and Mr Khoo Boo Lim, Chairman of the MAH, Penang Chapter initiated the agreement respectively.
Other distinguished guests witnessing the MoU signing included Mr Ahmad Taiff, DISTED’s Director of Academic Support and Continuing Professional Development and Mr Philip D. Theseira, General Manager of Royale Chulan.
With this MoU, the MAH, Penang Chapter will collaborate with LiFE Academy, the Continuing and Professional Development arm of DISTED College to endorse its professional short-courses in Hotel Supervisory & Management programme. With MAH’s extensive experience in the hotel industry, LiFE Academy and DISTED College stands in a good position to benefit from the professional insight into its existing School of Hospitality Management academic syllabus and other short courses offered by LiFE Academy.
In conjunction with the signing of the MOU, LiFE Academy is launching the Hotel Supervisory programme consisting of three different short courses: Certificate in Housekeeping, Certificate in Front Office and Certificate in Food Service respectively. Each professional short-course has been crafted to target those who wish to certify their skills and working experiences in the areas of Housekeeping, Front Office and Food Service.
“On behalf of the association, we are indeed delighted to collaborate and be a partner of LiFE Academy to provide such Hotel Supervisory courses. This will not only provide and benefit the employees of our members but to any other people who may be interested to pursue or enhance their career in the hotel and tourism industry. The expectations of the service industry has changed over the years just like our discerning guests, therefore we need to constantly improve ourselves by educating and acquiring knowledge so that we can deliver quality services.” Mr Khoo said.
Other professional short-courses conducted by LiFE Academy include Professional Culinary Courses. This will comprise of three different categories mainly patisserie, bakery and culinary which has been developed in partnership with the Penang Chefs Association. The course is ideal for beginners who wish to begin their career as a professional chef and working chefs who would like to refresh and upgrade their skills and knowledge within their respective culinary fields.
“We work with our industry partners to ensure that those in the hospitality and culinary industry meet high standards of professionalism,” Mr Paul Seah, LiFE Academy’s Head of Continuing Professional Development said. “Our aim is to support the tourism industry here in Penang by providing these professional development courses to those keen to join or are already employed in the various sectors of the tourism industry,” he continued. “We hope to design more courses in the near future,” Paul added.

Staff and students gather at DISTED College for the firecrackers, drums and lion dance performance to usher in the Year of The Dog.
The DISTED Annual Chinese New Year Open House began with a lion dance performance blessing the campus and the lighting of firecrackers to signify prosperity, good luck and strong wealth to the college and staff.
After the lion dance performance, staff gathered at the newly refurbished Heritage Hall for lunch and some fun activities such as Kahoot and the all traditionall Yee Sang toss. There were a total of 9 teams participating in the games and the top 3 teams that emerge as winners are “Hot”, “Walaoeh” and “Muhibbah” with the highest scores. It was indeed a time for togetherness and celebration.
Dr Seah Soo Aun, President and CEO of DISTED College shared the story of The Myth of the 12 Zodiacs and welcomed all to revel in the festivities during his opening speech. Tan Sri Dr Chin Fook Weng, DISTED’s Board of Directors and Puan Sri Mrs Chin were also present to grace the occasion. Professor Nagao and Mrs Nagao were amongst the VIP invited to join in the festivities together with other TUT staff.
Besides Kahoot, staff were also invited to shoot a video of the Yee Sang tossing ceremony and the most creative video with the most auspicious cheer wins a prize as well.
Other fun and interesting game sessions included Best Dressed and Chinese New Year sing-along session. All participants happily walked away with ang-pow prizes and gifts.

DISTED College welcomed 128 new students and their family members to its orientation day which took place on 9 Jan, from 9am at DISTED’s newly refurbished heritage hall. The new students orientation was designed to help freshmen made a successful transition into the DISTED community. During the orientation, new students would learned about the college’s academic and community expectations, campus resources, scholarships, programmes and services.
Dr Seah, President and CEO of the college stressed the important of developing new knowledge and social networking. “Today’s graduates need knowledge, effective communication and strong social network to keep pace with modern workplace,” Dr Seah said during his opening remarks.
New International student Ilya Krainuchenko from Australian shared his orientation experience, “The orientation is very informative,” he said. “It’s a pleasant experience,” he continued.
“The orientation provides us the information to understand the academic expectation,” new A-Level student Lau Yi Xuan said. Another new student Yaganesh Kalidass who registered for Diploma in Accounting was pleased to have the opportunity to meet up with his lecturers before the class start.
The event ended successfully with “Ice Breaking” activity conducted by volunteer students from Student Representative Council to help new students to overcome their first day jitters. Last but not least, a new T-shirt for everyone to start their new journey in life at DISTED College.
