Star Wars came to Queensbay Mall in Penang and 3 DISTED College Japanese Cultural Awareness Society (JCAS) members and their advisor were part of the science fiction movie promotion event.
Students Edmund Tan, Aaron Low, Melissa Lynn and their advisor Ko Ko Naing dressed themselves as various characters from the movie for a freeze mob held at the mall on 19 February 2012.
The event, which presented characters such as Darth Vader, the Imperial Guards, Storm Troopers, Jedis and Siths, was organized by the mall in conjunction with the re-screening of The Phantom Menace from the Star Wars series in digital 3D.
Preparing for the cosplay was an adventure of learning and fun.
“It was a very exciting but quite a rush too during the 1 week that we took to choose the characters for the cosplay, design and create the costumes and lightsabers,” Edmund Tan recalled.
Melissa Lynn, who is studying the Cambridge A-Level, said: “Constructing and painting the lightsabers to show their metallic effects was a tedious task that required hard work.”
“The effort was worthwhile as we could take pride in the final products and share the wonders of Star Wars with shoppers in the mall.”
JCAS vice-president and Cambridge A-Level student Aaron Low shared his excitement: “We had to drive around town from Penang Times Square to Chulia Street scouting for materials to build the props, which gave us a sense of adventure with The Force.”
“We hope to watch the movie Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace 3D in our cosplay outfits. It’ll just be so awesome!” he added.
