Awards and Bursaries

Generous awards and bursaries are provided each year by DISTED to encourage the development of a relevant, excellent and complete ambience in the college, leading to graduates with good knowledge, skills and positive contributive attributes to serve industry and community.

The Wawasan Education Foundation and the Yeap Chor Ee Charitable Trust are instrumental in providing significant funding to achieve the mission. The awards and bursaries are based on merit which encompasses both academic and socio-economic background of the applicants.

  1. The awards and bursaries are open only to Malaysians who sat for the relevant examinations and they must be new or commencing students of the programmes of study.
  2. The awards and bursaries are given based on examination results. All fees must be paid in the interim.
  1. All awards and bursaries are only tenable for the period of study at DISTED in Penang and recipients are not allowed to hold two (2) DISTED awards or bursaries concurrently. In the event a student is qualified for more than one award, the higher award will be given.
  2. The awards and bursaries can only be utilised to defray the fees for the programmes of study. They are not transferable and not redeemable for cash.
  1. Your parent or guardian, who must have a monthly income from business or employment, is required to act as a guarantor in respect of the refund of your scholarship to the college and/or payment of any outstanding course fees due to the college in the event that you withdraw prematurely from the course.
  1. The awards and bursaries will take effect only after the signing of the agreement, and should the recipients withdraw from the programme of study prematurely for whatever reasons, the scholarship award will not be valid and you are required to refund the college the amount of the scholarship that has been disbursed to you, and to pay all the outstanding course fees due to the college within 14 days from the date of withdrawal. Any financial penalties incurred as a result of the actions or inactions of the Awardee will not be covered by the Award and will be responsibility of the Awardee
  1. Changes in enrollment status after the start of the commencement may affect the status of the Award. Any changes must be made in consultation with your Head of School / Programme coordinator, notify the Scholarship Department and to be approved by the Chairman of the Scholarships and Awards Committee.
  1. All DISTED Award Recipient must meet and maintain all eligibility criteria and proper conduct required of DISTED students. As such, students must maintain continuous, full time enrollment for the entire duration of their programme. Failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the Award.
  1. Full-time status entails enrollment in a minimum of 4 subjects or 16 credit hours during the regular semester and 2 subjects or 8 credit hours during the short semester. Reduction of course load to less than full-time status may result in ineligibility for this award.
  1. Recipients must be prepared to serve 16 hours per long semester, if required to do so by the college. Failure to fulfill this requirement can also result in the suspension, termination or nullification of the awards and bursaries.
  1. All decisions of the DISTED Scholarship Board on the quantum and conditions are final and binding.
  1. It is compulsory for you to attend the AWARD AND PRIZE PRESENTATION CEREMONY at your own cost. If you fail to attend the ceremony, the scholarship award will not be valid and you are required to refund to the college the amount of the scholarship that has been disbursed to you, and to pay all outstanding course fees due to the college.
  1. The application closing date is 10 working days after the programme commencement date. Late applications will not be accepted. 
  1. The application form is available at the Front Office, the Scholarship Unit of the college and may be downloaded from here.
  1. DISTED reserves the right to amend the above conditions at any given time without prior notice.

  1. Recipients must achieve good academic performance to maintain their awards, which will be suspended should they fail to attain the respective examination results as stated above and/or fail to take part in student activities specified by DISTED.

  1. Degree awards are available for deserving students with good extra-curricular activities.
  1. The recipients must maintain a good performance level to maintain the award.
  1. The award will be suspended should recipients fail to maintain GPA 3.0 / 4.0 in every semester examination.
  1. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview.

Criteria and Conditions
  1. Awarded to students who have at least state level representation in sports prior to joining or while studying at DISTED.
  1. The award consists of partial tuition fee waiver for the programme of study.
  1. Recipients must achieve good academic performance to maintain their awards, which will be should they fail to attain a GPA 2.0 / 4.0 or an average of C in every semester examination and/or fail to take part in student activities specified by DISTED.
  1. Only short listed candidates will be called for an interview.

  1. Selection is based on socio-economic background, academic achievements and extramural merits of students who are registered with the Social Welfare Department as persons with disabilities.
  1. The bursaries consist of partial tuition fee waiver for the programme of study.
  1. Recipients must achieve good academic performance to maintain their bursaries. The bursaries will be terminated should they fail to attain GPA 2.0 / 4.0 or an average of C in every semester examination and/or fail to take part in student activities specified by DISTED.

Criteria and Conditions
  1. The award is given to Diploma or Degree student with the best overall result in their semesterly examinations. The President’s Scholar receives a tuition fees rebate and an Appreciation Certificate for their achievement.
  1. Student must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.40 / 4.00 in their latest semester examination results.
  1. Student must enroll in a minimum of 15 credits for long semester and 6 credits for short semester to be eligible for consideration.
  1. Selection is based on GPA for semester exam (minimum 3.40 / 4.00). In the event of a tie, selection will be based on the overall CGPA marks.
  1. The recipient of the President’s Scholar Award is selected by the Head of School.
